Hi, I had HL2 installed on my previous pc and it was all working fine.

Recently bought a much needed new system and when I was installing the disks I got this error msg when I got to the 4th (out of 5 cds):

I noticed in another thread that you can d/l HL2 via Steam and then just activate it that way if there are disk errors, so I may try that, In the mean-time if anyone has ANY suggestions what to do it'd be much appreciated.

I have no idea why it would do this all of a sudden, the disks are in mint condition, no scratches what-so-ever. And it's pissing me off. :dozey:

Nah I aint no Pirate. Bought the full game at the end of 04.

Any usefull comments would be appreciated.

Your best bet is almost certainly to download via Steam. It'll take a while (if you have 56k... err, see you in 10 years) but it'll get round the use of the disks. If you absolutely must have discs, make a backup through Steam of the game as a replacement for your faulty retails.

It may be worth seeing if you can install from those discs onto an alternative PC (or disc drive on your current PC), then do the whole backup thing and install with your backups. A bit roundabout, but perhaps still more time economical than straight downloading the entire game via Steam. Some disc drives just turn out to be tempremental with some discs. Also, be sure you have enough HDD space for the game. I remember that the installer wasn't bright enough to point out that I lacked the space needed for the games back in the day...

edit: if you have a friend with the game, or a backup of the game, or who can make you a backup of the game quickly, buy them a box of chocolates, because their discs should work as well as any others. Unless they have the GOTY edition or something.

Unfortunately I am the only person who likes HL2 in my town... That I know of... Ummm I'm currently going on 512k dsl... trying to get it via steam... seems like a longer but assured way to get it working... I can be patient... its been going for 3 hours and has done about 24% so far... I guess I'll have to wait it out.

I'm not to sure how this backup install idea works, any way to do a step by step how to do it? I'm no complete noob, just have managed to stay blissfully ignorant of a few tricks that many other people use second nature..

edit*

Goddamnit why do I keep double posting by accident?

kupoartist, thanks for the input though. :)

EDIT*

Just noticed in Steam you can right click on the game and there's a "backup" option.

But uh, If anyone wants to give me a few tips and hints about what that all does and the best way to go about it your more than welcome

The feature itself should guide you through the process. At the end of it all, it gives you an executable file containing whichever games you have chosen to backup. This means you're going to need enough free space to accomodate two copies of one game whilst you find a place to dump the backup to. You also need to find that place to dump to (CD/DVD Writer, External Drive e.g. iPod) and the relevent programmes for burning / moving the file, because Steam won't do that for you IIRC.

In the future, when it comes to reinstalling your backups, you simply open the .exe files and let them do their thing. Can take quite a long time mind you, but about 3,000 times faster than downloading again :P

Error 1334: You're not quite leet enough to play this game.

Sorry.

I was reading through this thread and my heart was rising as I thought I could make some sort of joke about leetness. Then I noticed the last 2 posts made the joke.

Oh how I cried.

Sounds like a plan... I have an Ipod with about 15Gb left on it and the new system has a DVD burner on it... I'll have to check it out when the original has finished d/ling.

****, its been going for about 6-7 hours now and has only done 70%!!

:rolling:
