Error: Cant find background image

Hi, new to this forum and Half Life 2.

I just got Half Life 2 but cant play it yet as I have a problem...
I get this error while trying to run HL2.exe

Can't find background image 'materials/console/background01.vtf'

Yes I have checked the directory and I did find the background01.vtf file.

The thing I'm a bit iffy on is the forward slashes. Arent they supposed to be like this "\"

I have now copied some folders, and it says:

Invalid or corupt background picture materials/console/background01.vtf

instead of:

Can't find background image 'materials/console/background01.vtf'
