this is really only for those who give a toss about footy.

what do you lot reckon of your team's chances this year? who do you reckon will win the golden boot?

i reckon england will go far, possibly even to the semis, but they have to get past france first :/ not easy.

the bookmakers have made france favourites again. personally i don't think they've got the same talent as in the 98 world cup and euro2002. i reckon italy or portugal will nip in. either italy with their boring frustrating tactics, or portugal (the european brazilians) with their flair and genius.

any of you lot lucky enough to get tickets for any of the games? my bastid friends managed to get some but i missed out since i have exams smack bang when the tournament kicks off :(

anyway, let's hear some predictions.
 
I'm gonna say England will win (not that I'm biased or anything). Our first game is against France, and as you said, they're not the same as they used to be, but we have a good side (the best in years)... so COME ON ENGLAND!!
 
i hope germany wins :) might be possible, they almost won the World Cup in Japan/Korea :D

Ok... I didn't care much about the team's developement in the last time... ;) so I don't really know what's going on right now... :D and so I don't know why the hell it got so bad :D
 
the same england team that just drew with japan? not likely, england won't advance out of their bracket.. mark my words!! look for france to beat them, and the sleeper croatia to tie.. maybe even beat them also! here are my picks for winners and runner-ups:

A: spain (can't pick portugal after that world cup display... i just can't do it Figo!!)
a: portugal
B: france
b: croatia!!!!
C: sweden (my gut says italy, but my head says sweden.. i should probably trust my gut.. but i'm stupid..)
c:italy
D: germany
d: dutch

QFs:
spain beats croatia
portugal upsets france!!
sweden over netherlands?
germany beats italy.. hard one to pick, but italy usually finds a way to **** up.

SFs:
spain over sweden!
germany over portugal!

Final:
SPAIN!!!!

golden boot: all of my thoughts here are for teams going out earlier.. which i guess is ok.. i'm thinking pauleta or robert pires (henry will be too much of a marked man to break out). i would pick morientes, but spain never delivers as a team.. so why did i pick them to go all the way? goddamnit...

.. note, i have absolutely no idea what i'm talking about.
 
I know the England - France match will be very close, I just hope we're on top form... we have to be!

Less than 2 weeks to go! I must prepare....

spain are a decent side, but by god they're a bunch of wasters half the time. i dunno what it is. stagefright?

lil'timmy you know quite a lot about footy for an american. scary actually. although i'm not surprised, you seem to be a fairly cultured bloke. do you follow the USA team? couple of important qualifiers for 2006 coming up in a few days.

oh a little tip, don't tell any england fans what your predicitions are in their presence...we have a reputation for being 'unwelcoming' at the best of times ;)

heh thx.. oh and i'll keep your tip in mind :eek:

anyway, i don't follow WC qualifiers too much, but i think US plays honduras tomorrow, which should be a good game (and will probably be on TV here).. the US keeps getting better it seems.

England are always weak in friendly matches, almost like they dont give a shit... unless they play Germany. I've got my £10 on England reaching the Semi's anyway, so rawk!

why not the full-final dedalus? i wouldn't care losing it... ;) getting there is more i could expect from the team right now...

I watched it, and as I said earlier England always are rubbish in friendlies. Did you notice that they were on the attack for most of the Japan match whereas Japan were on the defense? Thats usually what England does in the crunch... defend, defend, defend!
 
i don't think england were firing all cylinders last night. i wouldn't expect them to either since they might get injured etc. and i can't fathom why erikkson thinks lampard is better in the holding role than gerrard. completely bonkers. unless he's trying to play mind games and dupe france into thinking lampard will be playing. personally i reckon gerrard is england's best player. zidane vs gerrard? gerrard wins for me. it'll be one titanic clash though.

crazyharij, sweden have a chance! look at denmark all those years ago. they came into the tournament because yugoslavia dropped out, and they won the damn thing!

can't wait for it to start.
 
first match is on 12th June, Portugal vs Greece in Porto, 1700 GMT or 1800 CET (i think).

germany's first game is 15th June against Holland at 1700 GMT or 1800 CET (i think) :/ tough game

We are the hosts, but our chances aren't very good thou.


Basically our coach is the same one that lead Brazil to the 2002 World Champs, but I dunno.

btw, I live in a host City!!! We've got a new stadium, nwe streets.... Go me!!! Go Portugal!!!
 
Sprafa are you going to see any games? if so get us shitloads of photos! ;) which games will be played in your city?

portugal aren't that bad. just think, if christiano ronaldo and figo find their form, you'll be able to rip everyone to shreds. you've got a fairly easy group too. spain are the only real challenge in your group.

Well we ARE only the nr 5 soccer country in the world :LOL:

admitted, we weren't there 2 years ago, but in a LOT of European / World Cups we made it into the quarter/semi finals.

So I don't know where this belittling behaviour comes from (in all other situations I would agree, but not when it comes to soccer dammit!!!)

EDIT: and we've got Ruud van Nistelrooij, who'll kick germany's ass :E
 
The fifa world rankings are a joke and should be taken with a pinch of salt 99% pf the time. Not saying the dutch aren't a good team, they have some of the best players in the world (van nistelrooy, van der vaart etc) its just they never seem to 'gel' in the big competitions.

th eonly way England will succeed is to bring scholes off, bring Gerrard back central mid and play the holding role and let Lampard go forward then have a decent left sided player like Hargreaves or Bridge to support Cole.

Imho the dutch, enlglish and french team play some of the most attractive looking european football. Mostly focusing on the offense however has cost the Dutch important victories. That and *cough* not being able to take penalties cough*

The least attractive looking football has got to be the italian style (catenaccio I believe). But very effective. And after all, only victory counts.

Still think germany and france will be in the finals, and france will win. Kroatia and Denmark will be in the semi finals.

England and Holland will go out in extra time or during penalty shootouts, frustrating....
 
And my city is covered, realy covered with Portuguese flags. Nationalism at it's peak here.


I'm afraid that when we lose we might have some riots around here...
 
If the England team keep playing like they are at the moment, they arent going to go anywhere. They put their best side out against Japan and still couldnt beat them. I'd say Portugal or Spain will win Euro 2004.

Gerrard..better than Zidane? ARE YOU SERIOUS? Zidane is 5 times the player Gerrard is at the moment.

no.



zidane plays as an attacking midfielder, in the little hole between the opposition defence and midfield. the only player in english football who can cancel zidane out is gerrard. understand? gerrard has the strength discipline and skill to stop zidane. so as i put it, if you face these two off against eachother in a game, zidane vs gerrard ---> gerrard wins.

that's what i reckon anyway.


EDIT: my grievance was that erikkson thinks lampard can fill that role, which he can't as he isn't on the same level as either zidane or gerrard.

Portugal deserves to come very far, they have always played great football. Pity though that in the last World Cup they lost to South Korea (Go Guus Hiddink!). Anyway it would be nice for portuguese football, after Porto winning CL and all

yeah portugal have always had a strong side. Eusebio was probably portugal's best ever player, but he never won anything. time to play serious football and live up to the potential.

mourinho also wants to bring 3 players with him, Costinha, Ferriera and Deco. if he gets those 3 players, porto will be left with their spine missing :( not good if they want to keep the european cup.

there's a large french contingent at uni, we're giving them a football match after the exams finish :)

roll on 13 june ;)
