Ultimately, the most immediate reference for Far Cry 2 is not Crytek's original, but Deus Ex (Invisible War, sadly), in the way it presents interesting ideas, often slightly heavy-handedly, and features a gently saggy seriousness that can sometimes come at the expense of pacing. The result is a fascinating game with successes and failures that are both equally mystifying; one that rebuilds its story regardless of how badly you mistreat it, and yet struggles to spice up a simple escort mission. Far Cry 2 is unforgettable rather than perfect, then; brilliant, frustrating, sombre and comical, it offers freedom within extremely curtailed limits, and strives to treat its players like adults. In the end it remains, true to its source material, a game that was born to struggle with itself.

kinda disappointed that even though they're aiming at adults the quests are simple fetch quests

/In before 'not as good Fable 2!!? Fuk EG and Edge's British bias.

Still will pick it up along with Fable 2, Gears 2, Resistance 2(prolly), Lil' Big Planet(prolly), Dead Space and perhaps Cal of Duty: WAW, oh and Prince of Perisa and Mirrors Edge. YAY FOR RECESSIONS!

Word up.

I'm getting tired of this "Game A is soooo much better than Game B", meanwhile Game A is completely different than Game B, and I'll be picking up both while others think it's a life or death decision between the two.

...Nobody said anything like that but ok.

One more day to find out for myself. Pretty negative review, which is fine. I just wish he talked about some different things like gameplay, multiplayer, etc. The no shooting while driving is an example of something I wanted to know. Complaining about turning a single screw to fix a car, not so much. Oh well, one more day!!

I've started to notice Eurogamer being quite tough with their scoring...good thing too!

Anyway my copy has been posted by Play.com :D

The review didn't sound like a 8/10. It felt like a list of what's wrong with the game, somehow.

Mine hasn't been posted yet :(.

I'd get it myself from the store on the 24th, but I'm getting it for the X360 and somehow it's significantly cheaper to order it online. Console games are twice the price of a PC game here anyway, wtf.

Can't wait to get this one...when I get my new PC. So early next year will be lots of fun to play this and The Witcher:EE, Crysis, Dragon Age, etc with spiffy "Very High" settings.

Picking this up right now as a matter of fact. Brb

Went to the store and realized it comes out tmr.

Oddly enough, this review actually makes the game sound pretty good, while their glowing review of Fable 2 made that game sound like a awful interactive toy that practically plays itself (like Spore). I guess they have a completely different idea of what makes a good game than I do.

Why are reviews always so negative?
Because of hype. Everyone already knows what's good about a game before it's even gone gold. They just want to hear what's wrong with it, and whether or not it's worth their hard-earned cash. That's the nature of reviews now, sadly.

PC Powerplay gave it a 10, and they're Australian (like me) so I'm going to trust them.

For the year and a half that I read PC Powerplay, I never saw them hand out a 10. Guess it means something to get it from them...

PCPP is ****ing win. But you really ought to look at their reviews, not their scores.

That said anything 10 by them is probably an instant-get if you were even considering it in the first place.

Reviews are directly related to the hype-o-meter. The bigger the hype, the higher the score. Far Cry 2 rates an 8 on the hype-o-meter (knocked down a bit because of the ridiculous hype of Fallout 3, Fable 2, Little Big Planet, etc).
