As I already wrote in another thread, I'm the webmaster of the German HL2 Site Half-Life2.de. And we are working on a HL2 Modification called "European Battlefields". It will be a realistic WW2 Mod with some RPG features. You gain new skills like you might know it from some RPGs.

HERE you can look at some pictures. But more pics will follow in a few weeks.

I hope you like it. Unfortunality it's not really well-known in the USA yet.

Not another 'realistic' WW2 mod :/

Sorry, but your target market is flooded.

*reading reading* "It will be a realistic WW2 Mod" *stops... cries*

sorry... like the cute badger said... flooded.... overloaded... bah.

Tell me any other "similar" mod and I will tell you why EB is different and better ;) ! We got much information about the concept, but it's all in German :( ! I hope we will have more information in English soon.

I tend to close the Firefox window when i see realistic/WW2 or cs in a sentence... so i cant really give you any links, but im sure others can.

Yeah, imo the entire WWI/WWII game market is overused.

Well it's basically the same as WWII, with older weapons, and less flattering combat.

But I wouldn't play a WWI game... and I class them in the same category as WWII games :P

CS ist neither realistic, nor does it have anything to do with WW2 ;) !
I think I know the Modifications situation pretty well and there isn't anything that goes in the same direction as EB. They all try to be DoD-like or something, but not really realistic. And I don't think anyone of these have RPG features.

Anyone can say "my mod's better than yours" but without proof I'm afraid yours is still just another WWII game

Sorry :\

The problem, Jan, is that although they might not have RPG features, there are enough World War (either one) mods floating around that people have become bored with the genre. Even if yours offers a new slant, the subject matter is going to be fundamentally overdone. If there were only a WWII mod or two, a war mod with RPG elements would stand out quite a bit, but any unique elements will probably be lost in the World War shuffle.

All that said, I'd still be interested to hear more about how you're choosing to implement your RPG-ness. It's really too bad you couldn't use a different setting, one where your new angle would stand out more.

Oh, and I love your render style. Good stuff!
Yeah, you're probably right. But I don't like this "just another typical WW2 Mod" sentences. I hope the European Battlefields Site will be finished in a few weeks. It will be German only first, but you can read it with a web-translator if you like and we will present a lot of new pics then.

EB being a WW2-Mod might be an image problem, but when we are able to realize what we want to realize, it won't be similar to any other WW2 game.

The fact that people won't like it just because it's a WW2 Mod might be right. About the localisation and other stuff like this we can talk about in a year or so. That's not so important by now. You never know what happens and it's always possible that team-members loose interest and suddenly the whole project dies.

In Germany we are already pretty well-known but of cource it's always difficult to "go west" ;) ! But "Codename: Gordon" made it to an inernalionally well-known game and hopefully we will make it too.

The RPG features will be similar to Star Wars KOTOR I think. You can behave evil or good. You can kill everybody crossing your way to reach your mission goal or you can search for other possibilities. Your skills with a weapon will also change throughtout the game depending on how often you use them. There are much more ideas but I don't wanna tell too much right now.

Hopefully there aren't too many mistakes in the text.

If you're going into an overused genre, don't bother making the game unless you've got something new to offer it. (For example, Call of Duty is yet another WW2 game after MOH and BH1942, but COD has excellent AI that actually helps you out, it's very intense, and there's a ton of multiplayer game modes which are well done)

As I already wrote, I don't wanna tell to much this time. I think a "moral-system" works pretty good in a war game. Not in a big battle, but there are also other missions which are a bit more, well, personel.

The weapons system is in a way RPG-like, but many shooters already did it, so it's not new, but we try to make it a bit more complex.

I don't wanna say to much because we have to coordinate all these features and just don't know how it will work out. When HL2 is released we will give some more information.
