Just had to put our family dog of 11 years to 'sleep' because her spleen was bleeding from cancer, she went fast and hopefully painlessly but it was one of the hardest things I've ever been through. Any other hl2.net alumni been through this recently? Pretty horrible stuff watching a loved pet be euthanized.. I can't get the images out of my head.

I've had to do it to the dog that was raised with me. It was pretty gut-wrenching, but it's usually for the better.

Yeah we've had this dog from when I was in 2nd grade probably, I can't imagine life without her.

We had this Boxer who we got a few weeks before I was born, and we had to put him down when I was 13 because of Prostate Cancer, I knew him my entire life, needless to say the following months were complete shit.

Kitten got tangled in its own cord at birth, had to drown it in a bucket because it's legs had shrivelled.

We had to put my cousins dog to sleep, even though it was hers I still felt it was my dog. Even though she was like 18 years old I still felt that it wasn't her time ;(

Just recently my family had to put down our golden retriever due to cancer. The inevitability of this didn't hit me until it was happening right before my very eyes and it was one of the worst things I've ever experienced. I was depressed for days, and when I thought I'd gotten it under control after a few weeks, there were moments when it would hit me out of the blue for seemingly no reason and I couldn't even move. Just thinking about it now is close to bringing up some tears.

What made it a real gut puncher was that my family had been considering flying him overseas for a few months. There were periods of ups and downs when the whole thing was in question, but it eventually looked like we'd be able to do it with the vet's approval. So we just took him in for a quick nail clipping, but then he spotted another cancerous growth on his stomach that had literally sprung up over a night or two. We then put him to sleep three days later, right before the day of our flight.

It really sucks and I know what you're going through. The pain does eventually go away. And while it's probably not much comfort right now, you did do the right thing.

I had to put my dog down a couple of years back after he underwent acute liver failure brought on by (I suspect) his new arthritis meds. Weirdly, the actual procedure of killing him was the least worst part of the whole ordeal - leaving him in overnight, waiting while the vets manhandled him and did tests, seeing him lose his senses as his blood started poisoning his brain... all that was way worse than finally seeing him put his head down and go to sleep while I stroked him. I miss him bad though.

Once we saw this cat in a tree, and it just looked like my other cat. it was like.. D:
but then about a week later I just saw my cat walk up and go 'mew'.
It was freaking awesome. Sucks for whoevers cat that was.

Also, my neighbor(Who are lesbians...:D) had to put their lil chihuaua of like... 19 to sleep. It was getting so sad.. Blind, Deaf, but could still smell. For teh better.

I had to put my dog down like, 12 years ago. God I cried, I was much younger.

I've had to sit though seeing 4 close animals be put down. First my dad's old 28 year old dog, Brady, that he, and also I, grew up with. Then we had to put my brother's hamster down because we were having a Hamster wrestling tornament... We were little... My hamster bit through his' leg, because the other one tried to rape it... Don't ask... And the options were either amputation and it wouldn't be able to move around at all, and would completely be at our mercy, or put it down. The easiest way for all of us? Putting it down. My brother cried for days. Then my hamster lived for 4 more years after that (we had it for a year before we had to put the other one to sleep) Later in the last year, it started developing a respiratory infection. One day I came up to my room, and heard this wheezing sound. i looked around the room, cause my hamster got out of it's cage. It was lying under my bed choking on phlegm. On it's back, gasping for air. i could hear the tiny thing from 5 feet away. We took it to the animal hospital and had it put down.

The last one was just a fish that I had caught that was over 9 LBS and I just felt guilty for killing it to eat it. I almost cried for it, but I couldn't pass up fish. What fish tastes better than what you've caught yourself? :D

Dude. My cat ATE my hamster. It was like the Godfather, I wake up, and right there on my floor is the bloody head of my hamster! Reflecting on it, I didn't like that hamster anyway... Clever lil mofo..

He bent the cage open and got out. Unfortunately, My cat was in the room.
I was asleep.

full circle

I was circling around this thread for more then half an hour.
I was laking the words to express my feelings in such a matter.

Hope you'll feel better.

I've had to have a pet put down.

Was not a fun day :(

Nope, not yet. The closest thing must be sedating one of our cats because she had swallowed a needle.

my dog is pretty old, if i have to have him put down, i probably couldn't stand to be in the room when they do it. I've had him since i was 3, and i'm now 16. I'm gonna miss him. :(

Got my dog when I was 8, and grew up with her until I was well out of high school when a benign tumor for which the removal process was more dangerous than leaving it in eventually required her passing. I always knew she had to go some time, and I'm glad it was this way (not hit by a truck, tortured by disease, etc). It was heart wrenching, but I'm glad because she got to live a very healthy, happy life. We were all there with her when she was put down. It sounds like you provided your dog with a pretty good life while he (she?) was here.
A toast! Here's to family dogs: would that I could appreciate the love and companionship of a loving family on the same level that they can.

Had to put down one cat and one dog. Terribly sad, but it eased their passing.
