Evil Barney?

Random theory, hopefully false

Barney was disguised as combine overwatch at the start of HL2, was present when the teleporter went wrong and just plain absent in Episode 2.

Hell, in HL2 he could have given us a gun instead of the crowbar.

Has Barney done anything else suspicious?
 
Not that I can think of...

Why would Barney give us directions through the canals if he was Evil, he might be working for Gman, but he isnt evil as such
 
That is not particularly "suspicious" at all. We see him escaping with the rebels, and he's saved us from the Combine many times. If he were "evil" or working with someone, he'd have struck already.
 
I don't know you guys. Barney was the one who told me it was a good idea to secure myself in the stalker carrier.

BTW: I met someone that looked like a fat version of Barney. Sigged.

He wasn't disguised as a overwatch soldier. He was a metrocop who was secretly with the Lambda resistence.
 
Metrocops are normal humans, you know. He was just undercover as one.
No reason for him to be "evil". If he was to be an overwatch, he would go under horrible modifications.

Saved Gordon from Nova Prospect
Saved many Civies.
Killed many combine.

If Barney was evil, my heart would be broken. :(
 
The way I figure, Barney was the one responsible for the resonance cascade. In fact, he's manipulating everyone for his own, sinister, ends.

FACT: We see dozens of Barney's in HL1. They all sound the same. They all react the same. They all aid you for some inscrutable goal of their own. In the beginning of the game, he lost a message that was to have been given to you. THAT MESSAGE MIGHT HAVE PREVENTED THE RESONANCE CASCADE.

FACT: We do not see Barney in Xen. We do not see the Gman in Xen, either. Logically, they are both being kept back by the Nihilanth's awesome power.

FACT: Barney helps you in your goals of defeating the Nihilanth and destroying the Combine citadel.

FACT: Barney does not appear in Episode 2. Obviously he is racing towards the Borealis during the game, leaving the Advisors to try and deal with his lackeys.

So, in conclusion, Barney is the actual power behind all the events of the Half Life games. His own goals are obviously beyond the scope of Gordon Freeman, who he has taunted with offers of beers in the past, which he has never come forth with, obviously using metaphor to taunt him about the possibility of revealing all... but never doing so.
 
FACT: Barney is too stupid to work for combine.
 
Barney will not have been rushing to the Borealis during Episode 2, how does he even know it exists, and if he had been to White Forest we would have been informed, he clearly hasnt arrived at White Forest, he has no car or transportation except that Train which ofcourse doesnt go everywhere.
 
what would the gman have to pay people working for him? cake? oh wait thats a lie. never mind
 
OMG! Grodn in evil! Think bout it! He's killed so many metrocops, but aren't metrocops actually humans?! HE'S EVIL!

Like my mockery of you suggests, your points don't necessarily make him evil in any way. (Insert winky "JK" face here.) Maybe he gave gordon a crowbar because that was all that was available to him. Just cause he's a metrocop doesn't mean he has direct access to the entire combine's arsenal. he was present when the portal messed up, but if you paid any attention to the game you'd know that Lamar is the reason that the portal went all screwy. Just because he's not around in episode 2 doesn't mean that he's working behind our backs. In that case, since I haven't seen my brother in 2 days, he must be working against my efforts to play my computer! He's trying to thwart me! None of this stuff you brought up is very suspicious.
 
The only "evil" thing Barney has done is refusing to buy that beer..

I wouldn't recommend signing up with the creepy guy, you may end like Alan Shephard, who's still in the ice box where G-Man keeps the beers.

My point exactly, he only even mentioned it once. My guess is he was best mates with Nihalinth and when Nihalinth died he decided to embark on a cynical quest to taunt us with promises of beer. He's as evil as it gets :smoking:.

And who's Alan Shephard?
 
Adrian Shephard's brother, as seen on "Opposing Force: Full life Consequences"

He tried to rescue Adrian and ended in the ice box.

Sad, isn't it?
 
My "suspicions" of Barney were not intended to be any more than playful. He's obviously not evil.
 
It is a pretty cool idea though, that the leader of the revolution is actually trying to sabotage Gordon. In fact, some points actually do make sense..

1.) Why is he absent when White Forest needed every man it could get?
2.) Is he rushing to the Borealis and leaving his dirty work to the advisors?

However, I can't really believe that he's a member of the Combine because of his loyalty to the revolution and Dr. Kleiner along with the rest of the characters and when you fought along side him in City 17.
 
Valve have said they're still working out Episode Three, yet people still make up theories about each character.
 
Having played every other game in the HL saga and wanting a little more it's only natural that people will come up with theories (some crazier than others), specially with all that secrecy that surrounds the main story line... it's all in good fun, even those made by obvious trolls whose only wish is to cause polemic in the forum with their foundation-less "theories" (if you can call them that way).

Anyway, most of the commentaries about the characters are jokes.
 
OMG Barney IS EVIL!!!! Some reasons I got. He shoots you in HL 1, he cant even shoot good. And when Gordan shoots the enemy, Barney runs away when hes not looking! His clones?[or himself] block you from places to! They should know that if they let Gordan through they wouldnt die! HL 2 Reasons Hes Really A spy! He appears where the Combine sends him to gather information. If Barney has to help Gordan he has to inorder to prevent suspicion. But not so much THATS why he gave you a crowbar! Valve intended Barney to be a enemy, and Valve also thought Barney shouldnt come back in HL 2 but only did so because so people wouldnt feel bad about leading Barney to a turrent and getting him killed
