very simply, a few Installshield .exes kill my PC by running in the background for 30 mins and eating away resources before opening.

In detail, for instance, I try to run the install .exe for Splinter Cell 3 demo and nothing pops up but the process Setup.exe starts eating resources like hell in the background.

Anyone ever heard of anything like this ?

meh, it's an Intel Pentium 4 2.5Ghz with 512 333RAM.

hmm, check for viruses. my old computer was fine until i got 137 viruses and i had to burn it to disinfect and get a new one.

i'm serious.

also ad-aware
and are you the administrator in your account? or got the priviliges?

well then, do you have any drive software installed? (virtual cd drives, ect.)

that could be the cause.

or not..

i don't think that i can really help you.

i sometimes used to get that, i just cant remember how i sorted it out.
i should drink less

Do a virus cheak just to be sure,re-download and re-install the demo if nothing works.
Post some info on your hardware, might help us solve your problem.

Done all that long ago. It's not just one thing.

it's a P4 2.5Ghz/512Ram333/80gb HD Seagate/Radeon 9700pro
Windows Task Manager tells me I'm eating 240mb of memory with normal background stuff.

I had this same problem, so I created a new admin account and started using that to install.
Works fine now, give it a shot.

I had a similar problem with the demo for pnadora tomorrow, it is possible that its checking if you haven't got any burning equipment (Referring to a PCZONE Q&A problem that was happening to a punter when installing). It took about 2 minutes before installation could continue, and yeah, when I wen't to Ctrl-Alt-Del my CPU was running at 100% capacity :O

i have a prog. running in the background that i cant get rid of unless u remove it from win32 but its kinda hard to because spyware or virus checkers do nothing

I have the same problem, I'd had it for a very long time then reformatted and got a new mobo and stuff and it just never happened, but recently it has again. Some .exe files when I download them, not even open them, my computer instantly starts going very slowly, which is annoying because it could take 5 minutes to open the file, but once it's open it seems better, but really my computer doesn't go back to normal until I delete the .exe file. Or if I restart my computer with the file still there, it'll be ok upon restarting but if I go into the folder the file's in then it will start happening. I never did figure out why this happened.

You could download this program called 'End It All'. it stops unnecessary background programs from running. caution thoug, u dunno wanna mess around with this program.
