With the lion's share of the talk about Assassins Creed being about the interactions of the player charater and the advanced crowd mechanics, I think that the next few suggestions will get us all suitably prepared and excited for what to expect out of it:
Step One: read Poe's Man of the Crowd. Its a great short story about, well, crowds and how one man in particular observes them and disappears in them in pursuit of someone.
Step Two: Read Bernard Lewis' The Assassins: A Radical Sect In Islam. This and the next title were actually read by the designers for important info and ideas. Besides that, its a great history of a little-known group of serious bad-asses.
Step Three: Read Vladimir Bartol's Alamut. Its a great tale of the life and legend of the original “assassin” and world’s first political terrorist, 11th century Ismaili leader Hasan ibn Sabbah. Very enjoyable and eye-opening.
All of these will give you the proper background knowledge and prepare you for what is sure to be one of the best games of 2007. Enjoy!
