Wow! I have some great news to share -- I figured out why the hell exploding barrels wont respawn!
No more logic stuff, no more math counters, no more Input/Output stuff, nothing! Just like it used to be!!
You know what the problem was? The exploding barrel model is not quite flush with the ground when you paste it. Its very, very slightly tilted---The reason why the barrels aren't respawning is because a very thin slice of the bottom of the barrel is embedded in the ground wherever you copy/paste it. This is either a bug in Hammer, or a bug in the orientation of the exploding barrel model. Either way, this is a bug on Valve's behalf. They should fix it.
Anyway, the solution for making exploding barrels respawnable is painfully simple. Select your barrel, and raise it off the surface its sitting on, very, very slightly..So that when it respawns, it just falls an inch or two and lands on the ground where you placed it. The idea is, make sure the barrel doesn't contact the surface beneath it. Dont place it so high that the barrel respawns and falls over. Just an inch or two above the ground will do.
Thats all there is to it.
Here's how I found out what it was -- I have a map that had toooons of exploding barrels. When I originally made the map, I laid out one or two, and like everybody else, just copied one and pasted it all over the map where I needed it. I went around and destroyed all the barrels, and one or two out of 50 actually respawned. I figured there must be something unique about them, so I compared their properties side by side against barrels that DIDN'T respawn. The only difference? One barrel was one unit lower on the ground in three dimensional space than the other. One barrel looked to be flush with the ground, while the other was just barely above the ground.. Like less than an inch.
So, I set up a test. I selected a bunch of the non-respawning barrels, and raised them off the ground about an inch so that no part of the model was touching the ground, and recompiled -- voila, exploding & respawning barrels!
Woot!
