Extract, Convert, Edit

Ok - I want to extract a model from HL2 (I can do this). However, I want to then convert it to 3ds max format, or a format which 3ds max supports - edit it and then convert it back.

How would i go about the conversion process?

use the .mdl decomipler, decompile the mdl, get the old .smd import script, import the .smd, then export it using the 3dsm exporter, compile with studiomdl.
 
One last thing. If you had a completely different model, could you replace it over a current model (not replace, i mean just put it in the same directory in your mod folder) such as metrocop_sheet.vtf? As long as you added the texture... would it be the same or would it act like it and all go wrong?

alighed, and you'd have to be very carful with the .qc when you compile your replacment.
