Yes they are. I suggest 10kg from a height of 2m onto your left eye for a starting exercise.

Wtf are you people talking about give me an explanation :|

Perhaps it's all the festiveness of the season affecting my mental power, but how exactly do you perform "eye exercises"?

I would guess eye exercises are useless unless you've got something like a lazy eye.
This man speaks the Shens.

Oh, and Axyon does too :p

This is actually entirely incorrect. The primary cause of nearsightedness is genetic traits that are passed on.

Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says optometrist Anne Barber. "It's usually down to near-point stress." In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long without taking a break.

The American Optometric Association defines the cause of nearsightedness as follows:

"There is also growing evidence that nearsightedness may be caused by the stress of too much close vision work. It normally first occurs in school age children. Since the eye continues to grow during childhood, nearsightedness generally develops before age 20..."

One reason I think most optometrists blame genetics is because it makes it much easier convincing people to pay for eye checkups and glasses, instead of doing regular exercises and gradually increasing their eyesight for free.
It may sound like a conspiracy theory, but considering the increasing modern arguments for nearsightedness not depending _that_ much on genetics, it may very well be true to some extent.

My father has crystal clear vision, 1.1-1.2. My mother has regular vision. My brothers both have to wear glasses, but that's because they spent the latter part oftheir adolescense in front of AMIGA computers. I've always had decent vision, now it's gotten a bit worse because of my computer usage but it gets temporarily better when I don't suffer near-point stress under a few days.

I seriously think you can improve your eyesight if you just put effort into it.

I play video games and stay on the computer for hours at a time and still have 20/20 vision.

How far are you away from your computer screen? I'm about 0.50-0.70 m away from mine.

Oh come on, this is the Internet. I can pull facts and figures too!

Genetic Factors - The most widely held theory of the cause of myopia is that it is mainly hereditary. Measures of the heritability of myopia have yielded figures as high as 89%, and recent research has identified genes that may be responsible: defective versions of the PAX6 gene seem to be associated with myopia in twin studies [7]. Under this theory, the eye is slightly elongated front to back as a result of faults during development, causing images to be focused in front of the retina rather than directly on it. It is usually discovered during the pre-teen years between eight and twelve years of age. It most often worsens gradually as the eye grows during adolescence and then levels off as a person reaches adulthood. Genetic factors can work in various biochemical ways to cause myopia, a weak or degraded connective tissue is a very essential one. Genetic factors include an inherited, increased susceptibility for environmental influences like excessive near work, and the fact that some people do not develop myopia in spite of very adverse conditions is a clear indication that heredity is involved somehow in any case.

Heck, it even says that environmental factors are a result of genetic influences.

A Google Image search of "lazy muffin eye" turned up some surprisingly disappointing results.

Anyhoo, I have horrible vision. I have to wear glasses or contacts to see about a foot. Literally.
