Summary
Biden and Palin debated, and both mangled some facts.

* Palin mistakenly claimed that troop levels in Iraq had returned to ?pre-surge? levels. Levels are gradually coming down but current plans would have levels higher than pre-surge numbers through early next year, at least.

* Biden incorrectly said ?John McCain voted the exact same way? as Obama on a controversial troop funding bill. The two were actually on opposite sides.

* Palin repeated a false claim that Obama once voted in favor of higher taxes on ?families? making as little as $42,000 a year. He did not. The budget bill in question called for an increase only on singles making that amount, but a family of four would not have been affected unless they made at least $90,000 a year.

* Biden wrongly claimed that McCain ?voted the exact same way? as Obama on the budget bill that contained an increase on singles making as little as $42,000 a year. McCain voted against it. Biden was referring to an amendment that didn't address taxes at that income level.

* Palin claimed McCain?s health care plan would be ?budget neutral,? costing the government nothing. Independent budget experts estimate McCain's plan would cost tens of billions each year, though details are too fuzzy to allow for exact estimates.

* Biden wrongly claimed that McCain had said "he wouldn't even sit down" with the government of Spain. Actually, McCain didn't reject a meeting, but simply refused to commit himself one way or the other during an interview.

* Palin wrongly claimed that ?millions of small businesses? would see tax increases under Obama?s tax proposals. At most, several hundred thousand business owners would see increases.

Hmm, mediamatters seems to think factcheck is wrong on one point:

http://mediamatters.org/items/200810030010?f=h_latest

Following the October 2 vice presidential debate, several media outlets have falsely claimed that Sen. Joe Biden was wrong when he said during the debate that Sen. John McCain "voted against funding the troops" in a 2007 appropriations bill. Biden said: "John McCain voted against funding the troops because an amendment he voted for -- voted against had a timeline in it to drawdown American troops. And John said, 'I'm not going to fund the troops if in fact there is a timeline.' " In an October 2 article, CBSNews.com wrote of Biden's comments: "This is wrong. The 2007 troop appropriation amendment first had a withdrawal timetable. McCain urged the President to veto that amendment -- and Bush did, and most Republicans voted against the amendment -- but McCain missed the actual vote." Similarly, in an October 2 post on MSNBC.com's First Read, NBC News' Carrie Dann and Mark Murray reported: "McCain OPPOSED -- but did not vote on -- a Senate measure with troop funding because it contained a timetable for withdrawal. Biden said McCain 'voted' against it" [emphasis in original]. And in an October 3 article, FactCheck.org also claimed: "Biden is simply wrong to say that McCain voted against that bill; he was absent and didn't vote at all. McCain did oppose the bill, and he urged President Bush to veto it." In fact, Biden's statement was correct: While McCain did not vote on a later version of the appropriations bill, he voted against the measure on March 29, 2007, and said at the time that he was opposing it, in part, because it "would establish a timeline" for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

please explain in detail what is wrong with using media matters as a source on an article about facts in the debate ..if you have a problem with the site in general please list with sources which statements or facts presented are inaccurate ..simply saying "are you serious" says absolutely nothing except that you're too lazy to quantify your statement

media matters?

are you serious?

Actually looks like factcheck corrected themselves. So mediamatters was in fact correct. As stern said care to explain why mediamatters isn't a good source? In fact I'll do you one better, find me one example of mediamatters ever being factually incorrect.

they're factually incorrect cuz media doesnt matter hyuk hyuk

I got nuthing, oh and my cat's bum smells like poo

zomg!

I don't get why he even hands around the politics board. Every claim he makes he never comes back to defend. He should get off this board and go be a professional politician, he could actually make a living selling bullshit to the american people.

some of the mods have threatened people in the past who do nothing except troll the politics section but never add in anything worthwhile ...sooner or later unzero will be banned from posting in the politics section just like lemonchicken was ..although he was eventually banned for life

The main problem is that Media Matters biased towards left thats not saying they aren't wrong on a lot of stuff but they never seem to after people on the left spectrum.

once again you prove that you havent read the supplied material ..the mediamatters article in question fact checks BOTH palin and Biden facts they dont only skewer palin ..but I guess it's too muich to ask that you view anything not supportive of your side with an open mind

Right, and that's what they state clearly on the web site. That doesn't answer why you think that shouldn't be used as a source when their information is 100% accurate. In this case they were right and factcheck.org corrected their report. So why do you continue to post in these threads when you really have nothing of value to add?

*enters thread*
I told myself the day that No Limit and Stern banded together to rid of another member I would cut off my pinky... toe... nail.

*trims 9ft toe nail*

oh... uh.. Media Matters and Fact Check are Gods.

oh nolimit and I have been in cahoots since the dawn of time ..it's what all good lieberals do: band together

Band of brothers, marching together.
Heads held high in all kinds of weather.
With fiery blasts, our roaring rockets rise,
Beyond the Earth, beyond the skies!
At the sight of Stern, take your stand,
With the gallant leader of our band.
Send a joyous shout throughout the land!
For Rocket Stern-in-the-Hood!

Shit, we've been exposed. Self destruct sequence begin.

I am so glad we have these organizations, but I also wish that every American would be forced to review their findings before election day.

I still just can't believe anyone takes Palin seriously after her interviews and the debate. ;(

my 2 brothers were at my house last night ..we were smoking a cig outside when my younger brotyher said something about Obama being muslim and that McCain was the best choice for prez cuz he's a war hero ..well needless to say my older brother looked at me and we both said "wtf is wrong with you" ..we then slicced his points to pieces ..so if my brother can blindly support McCain (and he's canadian!) then I can see how americans can eat up the obama bullshit they're spoonfed by the mccain camp

I later said to my wife

"my younger brother made the mistake of telling my older brother that he supported McCain" ..my wife lol'ed

I have yet to understand why people think he's a muslim.
