failed to Lock Vertex buffer in CMeshDX8:: LockVertexBuffer.. uhm oh noes?

From the lovely steam update no doubt. When I get this error which is several times in a row, Hammer shuts down and Steam has to be restarted. Usually it gives the error when the screensaver starts up, but today I found that it will do it without the screensaver . Anyone know how to fix this?

I get the same error message but that is when I just load the game. I cannot get it to run at all. Anyone got some ideas?
