wtf?!...almost all the time i'm trying to run css it crashes with a message "failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer"
Has anyone a problem like this, i've been waiting for this game so long that this error is killing me. :x
My comp is:
Athlon 1.4
512 DDR
Gf3Ti 200

I've tried to change drivers but it still doesn't help, so please Help Me i you can :(

Ps. I succed to run the stress test(only once) but i had only 7 fps, all settings law, 800x600...i thought it would be better btw

Hey, yeah someone I know is getting this same error and this is what he has tried so far:

Drivers: Every driver set he can think of - back as far as the 53.** series
DirectX: 9.0, 9.0b, 9.0c
Uninstalling & Reinstalling
CS:S Official Forums (nothing)
Other forums (nothing)
REGEDIT FIX (changing which directx source uses in-game)

It just started within the past 48 hours. It only crashes right before the map loads. It doesn't crash for the video test though. That's the part he doesn't understand.

The other crazy part - and this is really crazy - He has outright deleted the living crap out of the CS:CZ, CS:S, and HL2 folders only to have them magically reappear the moment he start's Steam up again, even though the data fills almost 2 whole cds. He has deleted it, emptied his recycle bin, and restarted, and it will still magically reappear.

If you guys know why this happens and how to fix it please let me know...

Well the magically reappearning is because those folders are in the GCF files.

I think it's something to do with the GeForce 3 card...since I haven't even HARDLY heard of a GF3.

I've already gave up...i had enough. I also tryied everything. It pissed me off beacause i'm hearing all the time that this game is working quite good on worse machines then mine...for exemple on geforce 2(even when i start it i had max 7fps). Btw after reinstaling all(steam, css) i succesfull run it, but only once and after that i had the same error message, so, to hell with that...waiting for new patch/comp

have you tried to lower the directX to 7 or 8??
type -dxlevel 80 in launch under preferences or -dxlevel 70

Your card is probably not suited for dx9...

yeah, it's not suited but it supposed to run good on 8.0
it's working on dx7, but there's no reflections, crapy shadows, etc. and in tunnel for example i almost dont see textures on players...and sometimes the game is slowing down extremely. I run it once on dx8, it started, but there is a huge difference in fps, about 30 frames
Fortunely it's beta, maybe full version will work properly...hope so

got the same problem.... just bought Half-Life2 and tried to run it on my brandnew laptop computer (NEC PC-LR500AD, Pentium 1.4 MHz, ATI RADEON 9700).
First got message that I have to update the video driver (checking on ATI's website, there seems to be an update... but I cannot install it.... & NEC tells me there is no update on their side).
So, this was no solution yet.
When Half LIfe2 is loading, when the word 'loading' appears... it blocks/freezes and gives me following error message '"engine error : failed to lock vertex buffer in CmeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer"'....

Contacting Valve technical support... they bluntly tell me that it is because I have a DVD writer on my laptop... ?"#$%&' (meaning that HL2 could not be played on most of the new laptops available now????)... what a crap....

Still looking for a solution! HL2 in the box only would not be nice ==> want to play it!

problby no support for the cards so it is not been tested on them

i have no idea what a vertex buffer is , but it sounds boring
