Every time I try to run HL2, after around 5 mins- 60, the game freezes, usually with looped sound. When I Ctrl-alt-delete out of it I get these messages:

Failed to lock vortex buffer in CMeshDx8:Lockvertexbuffer

and

Steam.exe (main exception)win32 structured exception at 015FEA54
Attempted to read from virtual address 0 without appropriate access rights.

Has anyone had this problem, and found a solution?

Have you tried searching the steam powered support section?

Intel Core 2 CPU 6300 1.86GHz
1024mb ram
Windows XP Media Centre Edition
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS 512mb
DirectX 9C
Latest drivers :)

I meant that they seem to refer the problems to ATi cards.

Welcome to the club! This problem appeared few months ago and still hasn't been fixed. Some people managed to bypass it by lowering your DXlevel to 7.0, disabling sound, etc., but there's still many of us who tried everything and still are unable to play. I'm afraid that Valve might never actually fix it 'cause they consider this issue 'a conflict between computer hardware and drivers with the Source engine'. Translating it to understandable language: 'Game stopped working? Too bad. But we have your money already, so f**k off please'. I always thought that Valve is a great company, but now...

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=500297 -here is a 11-page-long thread about this problem, you might find a solution there. If not... well... there's always hope that devs do something about it (for now they haven't even confirmed that they know about it). Good luck.

BTW: This is the first time i see that somebody gets some error messages (usually you can't even ctr+alt+del to desktop). You might want to send it to Support team, but it's possible that they won't even read it (I got 2 identical copy-paste answers from them for two different issues :hmph: ).

Well, I've emailed support, but I don't expect to hear anything helpful back from them.

Ahh, my friend helped with this, I've added -dxlevel 70 to the launch options and it hasn't crashed since.
