I've been playing Fallout 3, on and off, for a while now on Steam and I'm almost finished my first play through. Only thing is, I've not got any achievements. I know Steam doesn't recognise them, and if I want them to show on my Raptr profile or anywhere else, I have to log in to Live. When I do that, I don't have access to my save files. I'd have to start a new game. It's so bloody annoying!

My question is, if I start again logged into Live, where are my saves kept? Do I lose my current saves, or are they stored elsewhere? I'm not about to start again anytime soon... Just so I know for future playthroughs and to satisfy the achievement whore in me :p

I've been playing Fallout 3 recently and I didn't even know it uses GFWL. And I really don't understand your question.

If you played it on PC, how could you not know? I was stuck playing it on the 360 for that very reason. GFWL is broken enough even for people who have hi-speed internet(s).

That's pretty creepy. I have the GOTY edition on Steam. Maybe I can't remember logging in to Live when I first started the game half a year ago? I just have no memory at all about anything GFWL-related in the game.

Me too. I played Fallout 3 on PC without any matter related to GFWL. I never logged into GFWL, because it doesn't work with my modem.

I've been playing it on Steam since I got it in the winter sale. I had never logged in to GFWL. I've not had any problems with it other than I don't get any achievements. It looks like you only get them if you play it on consoles or log in through GFWL. I logged on, reluctantly, to see what would happen and it doesn't recognise the save data from playing without GFWL, but only if you're logged in. Log out, and it allows you to use your save files again.

So, Yeah, I kinda found the answers to my question anyway. Apparently you can only get the achievements through GFWL (Although New Vegas is different) and I'd have to start again if I wanted to get them, which i'm in no hurry to do right now. I've heard of a few people having problems if they had GFWL logged on and accidentally hit 'new game' instead of 'continue' and losing their save data.

You don't HAVE to use GFWL to play the game (as Edeslash said it runs fine, if not better, without it), it just appears that they would like you to if you want those damned achievements...

Now that I think of it, I feel like Fallout 3 is just the kind of game that should not even have achievement. They simply serve no purpose and might even spoil the open world type gameplay. I would enjoy Fallout 3 less if it had achievements. They didn't bother me in NV though.

Do some Googling around, I am pretty sure that you are able to dig your saves out of their non-GFWL place and put them somewhere which GFWL recognises. I don't think all GFWL games let you do this, but worth searching for.

And now, suddenly, Fallout 3 insisted that I log into GFWL, wanted a product code which I apparently had not used yet and I 'lost' my saves. Turns out moving the non-GFWL saves to the GFWL folder couldn't be any easier.

Yep, if you don't log in to your GFWL account first thing, then they make you use whats essentially a "guest account" and it makes it very easy to lose your save files. Easy to remedy but ****ing retarded regardless.

I just bought Arkham City a little while ago and GFWL was pissing me off so god damn much. Took me like 1.5 hours to install the **** before I could play because of GFWL updates and errors and bugs and all sorts of annoying shit. God damn I hate that system.

Same happened to me when I got Arkham Asylum ages ago... wouldn't let me play at all without registering with GFWL... was not in a good mood... and it took twice as long to set up the game cos of it

Minor annoyance: I now have to manually log in to GFWL every time I play Fallout 3 to access my new saves. Unless I once again copy them to the non-GFWL folder...

Aaaaarrrrrrrrggghhhh!!!

Ok, where I wasn't keen on GFWL before, I now positively DESPISE it!

Having copied my saves into the GFWL folder to allow me to start getting the achievements, I'm now going to move them back to the normal folder! Sod the achievements!

I've played Fallout 3 for probably around the 60-80 hours mark and loved it. It maybe crashed 3 times in all those hours. Since I swapped to using GFWL last week, the game probably crashes at least 5 times an hour. Sometimes as often as 5 times in 10 minutes! Has it always been that bad? Is GFWL that bad with all games played through it? I don't remember Arkham Asylum being as bad.
