I've finally finished the game, whilst I enjoyed it loads I'm quite sick to the stomach of games which rely on the whole let's shoot a million things and give you an ending with some fmv. It's been done too many times, there's no tactics in it and the gameplay just seems quite dull.
I was however impressed with the end boss on max payne 2, it was classy. You had to keep moving, while you wouldn't get hit by a miliion rockets. You had to really do well to hit some targets to finish off the enemy.
I hope this is what we get from hl2, and I may also conclude that this might be a key fact in why people don't partically like xen, besides the fact that the ugly worlds and bouncy castle bits.
I really do hope that fps develpours take note of the small niche of pure adventures, which put story over guns.
However I don't mean the myst style where you have very limited interaction and huge menial tasks.
But then again here we have a huge strength for the original hl, gordon got loaded after hl2 from bar that was donated to him after the game. You really could feel this cliche 'a struggle of surival'
As I've already stated I love adventure games, the like of broken sword, monkey island, sam & max (RIP), DOTT.... I could go on!
However the adventure gaming genre, however making a recovery. Isn't spitting out a huge load of games per year. (Not even loads of sub quality ones)
This is why I fear however how scary doom 3 might be, I'm expecting some 500ft high monster at the end to just scream at me. As in the original half-life, one Redeeming fact was that the hl monsters (of) were target based, I actually quite liked the scripted sequences but there wasn't much background material about these things, they just existed.
Anyway I'm gonna stop now before I enter huge ramblings.

The first time I played farcry i was on hard mode, so beating all the trigens and guards before the black guy (cant remember his name) took quite a while, I was actually relieved that i didnt have to fight another boss. I guess its just personal taste.

Bosses are stupid its usually shoot loads of ammo run away and hide, perhaps heal then go out again and shoot like crazy. They are usually so big you dont have to aim. They are a bit annoying but they bring some variety to the game, it extends the games "shelf life" since your always stuck at that boss that gets in the way.

My idea of a boss would be something small, almost headcrab size, with body armor and an invisibility suit (So you have to hunt for it...mauaahaahaha!!!)

OMFG I JUST WROTE A WHOLE 3 PARAGRAPHS ON BROKEN SWORD 3 AND THEN I ACCIDENTLY CLICKED THE "BACK" BUTTON ON MY MOUSE!!! ARRRRRHGHHH!!!!

anyway, all i said was the ending was---

--spoiler---

really crap as the main characters dont even kiss OR SHOW ANY HINT OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AFTER WORKING TOGETHER!!! well, maybe a hint... but thats not the point. AND I FORGOT THE OTHER THING I WAS GOING TO SAY BECAUSE MY MOUSE HAS A BLOOMING BACK BUTTON ON IE!!!!!!!!!

That's not revolution's style, However I'll PM that to Tony Tomorrow. ;)
I'm on the credits tho :D.

Boss fights are hard to make well in an FPS I think. I have yet to see a game that does it right. HL, and OP4 screwed up...I thought they were lame. I actually think that it adds to the realism of a plot if there isn't always a big end boss. It's what makes a kind of crappy plot... "Oohh.. big bad boss..ok he's dead, now I guess that makes everything just fine."

*Spoiler*
I thought it would be really cool if when Jack gets booted out of the chopper with just the 10 bullets or whatever...that you could get a small chance to shoot down the helicopter...it could be like a big plot-changing point. The helicopter could splash down in some water of some kind (to allow survivors) and Val would be with you the rest of the way or maybe she'd get killed. I just think it'd be cool if that were possible....I like plot alternatives in games.
*End Spoiler*

Of course, the boss is also the thing that you fight towards. Seeing what the hell boss is is often the best aspect of beating a game, besides the inevitable ending sequence.

Lotsa Spoiler!***********************************

Lots of people were unhappy with Blueshift's ending, as it had no boss. Fighting only lots of marines is a bit of an anti-climax.
Decay had pretty much the same issue. Constantly spawning aliens.

I think every game needs a final boss. Kind of an interactive reward for your time.
But, at the same time, the game shouldn't end just because the boss is dead.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time did it this way, and it was great.

But in Halo...

[sort of spoiler]
Halo didn't have a boss at the end but I considered one of the best game endings in gaming history.. so y'know

I agree, Halo only had a puzzle & timerace, that felt way better than any boss ever.

Metroid prime had some good boss battles... you really had to work hard to figure out how to kill those things, and had to use some of your special abilities too...

Metroid prime and Halo are one of my favorite FPS ever. They both have the balance perfect between shock and agression, like when you run across the ghosts in MP, the music quietens and the room goes so dark, then they jump out at yoiu and your left thinking "WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY??? ARRRGHH!!!"

and Halo just had the best end ever. EVER.
SpoilerVVVV

When u r escaping from the flood in Halo that gave me a complete feeling of overwhelment. so many creatures to kill, such little chance of doing so. And just when u think it couldnt possibly get any worse, u r plunged into ur own ship, caught inbetween a war being fought by your two greatest enemies. And then... when you escape in the warthog, i put my music on SO loud and enjoyed every moment of it. The REAL thrill was when i watched my ride out of here get blasted to smithereens, and then i really and trully did feel like the awesome master cheif i was meant to be when against all odds i crashed through the defences and smashed my way to victory. Everything got blown up and i was left with hardly any health, but i did it first time and i was left with an incredible feeling in my heart.
Compared to half life, i thought the ending to HL was pretty weak. You just go to Xen, the climax is over and you meet a big baby who fires crappy balls at you. And i dont really feel like a hero in HL, i just feel like a superhuman. on normal mode i was completely invincible to naught but the ground when i fell.

^^^^i just copied that from something i said in a HL story thread, lol

Half-Life had a poor boss, but the end train ride was great imho. It was really mysterious and it was cool that you were able to choose.

have you ever noticed, that there are different death endings? the first time i completed the game and refused, i was sent to the same place that i was when the experiment went wrong- with all the ligtning shooting things- but 100 times more... the second time i was transported to a xen factory with hundreds of the big, bulky xen warriors.

You sure? It didn't happen to me. What I did notice, however, is that in that factory place with loads of grunts - which, may I say, pretty much proves the theory that I and many others believe is correct: that after Freeman killed the Nihilanth the grunts, which were being controlled, came under the G-Man's control.

Anyway. It looks like there are loads of grunts...lines and lines of them...but actually there are like six and the rest are cardbard cut-outs! It's true, it made me laugh so much when I saw it. Could somebody screenshot that ending?

EDIT: Also, I like bosses when they're done well - which I think FC achieved when you were fighting Crowe (both times...although the second one wasn't really a boss). I quite liked the ending, especially the Dam level...which ia really part of hte ending. I also liked the fact that after fighting through loads of guys and mutants the final boss was...

A man in a white coat!

With FC's plot I expected him to mutate, but no, i just shot him in the head. Owned.
