Post your favorite track at the moment by teh phex here, whether it be from polygon window, afx, anything.

AFX - Laughable Butane Bob

aphex twin - curtains
aphex twin - lichen
aphex twin - parallel stripes

selected ambient works vol. II was my first RDJ album, and remains my favorite, despite that I have eight or so others.

Oh God, don't get me started on how good both SAW albums are.

Yeah, they're simply brilliant. SAW 2 is a masterpiece, among the best ambient pieces ever made. He's seriously gotta get off his ass and relase another one :p

I was always a big fan of Vordhosbn some reason.
Loveeeee RDJ.

And yeah, SAW is just incredible.

Girl Boy Song has always been my top, I think. Also 4, which is a very similar track.

"Ziggomatic V17" is him at his best IMO. Just full-blown crazy shit transforming through so many variations. Truly great.

That said, I often find it hard to pinpoint one track because he has so many different facets. So if I also had to choose according to type as well...

Ambient - "Blue Calx"

Acid - "Boxing Day"

Old School IDM - "Acrid Avid Jam Shred"

Prepared Piano - "Beskhu3epnm"

I'd have to agree with you on those best songs of each category there, Absinthe. Especially the ambient and Old School IDM.

Blue Calx is amazing. Tied for his best ambient work, but not alone on the throne.

I had difficulty choosing between "Blue Calx" and "Lichen"... and "Rhubarb".

"Blue Calx" epitomizes ambience IMO. But the other two are exceptionally beautiful in that somber sort of way.

Switching over to Pulsewidth, and yes, Blue Calx is the win.

Pulsewidth <3

There's a lot on that album I wouldn't consider ambient at all, but they're still wonderful. SAW1 has this effortless quality to it, like he just peeled off great track after great track all in one go.

I agree, and also just wanted to agree with you, again, on Ziggomatic... The last minute or so of that track is perfect. ****ing beautiful.

I really agree. They're very inituitive, more ambient techno than ambient, but very calming and nice. Xtal is just wonderful. It's all the subtlenesses in that melody, the sounds you "don't" hear that makes it so great. really hard to explain but i'm sure you know what i mean

I've only heard the Drukqs album and I think its fantastic. I can't even begin to try and say what songs I like best as the titles are all.. well, all over the place, but the first 5 songs of Disc 1 are amazing together. And that Avril piano peice is excellent.

I need some more. Whats all this SAW talk? Can anyone recommend me any more Aphex Twin/Richard D. James, etc stuff?

SAW = Selected Ambient Works

He has two volumes. The first is more ambient electro, whereas the second one is mostly quiet, truly ambient minimalism.

If you're looking for his more exceptional albums, you can't go wrong with SAW2 or the Richard D. James album. He also operates under other names, like Polygon Window, Caustic Window, GAK, AFX, and a bunch of others, all with very different styles. Your mileage may vary.

Also, you have to see the videos "Windowlicker" and "Come to Daddy". You just have to. Particularly the first.

Alright, I'll have a hunt for the SAW albums then. They sound like my kinda of thing. Cheers. :)

Yeah, I've seen them. Great videos. I see them as mandatory videos that people have to have seen at somepoint, like Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer video or Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Ehh.

EDIT: I'm gonna look me up some more Richard D. James and his other works. To Wikipedia!

I searched for Vordhosbn because I realized I was in love with it, and had to see what others thought, and saw this thread :D
Definitely my fav track = Vordhosbn...
at least so far it is, I haven't heard the rest of drukqs because I only DLed the one.

Both SAW 85-92 and SAW II are wonderful.

Just <3 RDJ <3 <3 <3 :E

I'm currently listening to "Omgyjya Switch 7". Always been a standout track for me ever since I got drukqs. Something about the sadistic whipcracks in the beginning.

I've been listening to SAW recently. I must say, I much prefer it to SAWII. SAWII is still great, though.

Vordhosbn

Altough it's hard to choose...I'm listening totp the chosen lords album...good from beginning till end.

O course Richard D James, Selected Ambient works and Drucqs are superb

Never knew there where so much AFX-addicts on this site

Greetzz to all ;)

yeah xtal is ****ing great.

right now i'm really enjoying the hangable auto bulb ep, the track every day in particular. digging up lots of good early aphex stuff. surfing on sinewaves is a great album. analogue bubblebath and old AFX tracks like .1993841 (good luck finding that one)

anyway, richard ****ing rules.. peace out

Gettin' mah dick all hard 'n shit. Make a nigga wanna fuck, know what I'm sayin'?

Any way, now it's "Gwely Mernans" from drukqs. :( I can never choose which track I like the most. This song is the soundtrack to my nightmares.

Yeah, Xtal is a favourite of mine from SAW, aswell as Pulsewidth and Green Calx.

XTAL = HEAVEN IN AN AUDIBLE FORM.

favorite track right now? why, if you must know, eraser, it'd have to be good ol' alberto balsalm.

oh, and ptolemy.

Is ...I Care Because You Do worth a buy? I've not heard anything from it (I don't think), but it's like... the only Aphex Twin in my local CD store, so I'm tempted to pick it up later this week.

ZOMGOMOG GET IT!

but it's not in his hard, fast drill style. one track is pretty harsh on the ears, but that's about it, and once you hear alberto balsalm you'll be in ****ing love.

also, listen to it here. http://www.bleep.com/current_item.php?selection=WARP30_DM

check out alberto balsalm, right now.

Well, I like all the different types of styles I've heard him do so far, so that should be alright. I'll pick it up this Saturday, then.

EDIT: Sounds pretty good, but I can't really tell from such a short sample.

Definitely. There really isn't another release like it. If I had to place it, it's somewhere between SAW1 and the RDJ album, but that placement doesn't really do a lot in defining it's sound.

Alberto Balsalm

You can actually restart the playback by just clicking on the tracks timeline.

I Care Because You Do is amazing. It's got variety to it, especially Next Heap With, which is really great.

[Formula] on Windowlicker has some really great sounds in the first five seconds
