One of the things that struck me immediately even upon playing the demo of this game was how great the voice acting and sound is. Having finally finished the full game, I've come to appreciate just how crucial the voice acting and audio diaries were in giving life and character to the idea of Rapture. So many games screw up on the voicing, so I think it's important to give credit when a game gets it right.
A friend of mine who has the game on the 360, however, just seems to breeze through the game paying hardly any attention to that aspect, which I found outrageous. Whenever I got an audio diary, and sometimes when I got a radio message, I would go straight to the map screen so I could listen to the detail without splicers trying to chew my face off. To me, missing out on the cool little details in the diaries and the character stories is to undervalue the best element of Bioshock, which is IMO it's atmosphere and setting. Anyone agree?
Anyway, with that out of the way, what did everyone think of the voice acting, and what were everyone's favourite diaries?
The VO for Andrew Ryan was of course superb, but IMO Sander Cohen's was possibly the best in the game. His voice is absolutely perfect for the character and he doesn't deliver a weak line throughout. It really helps strike the perfect note in all the great set pieces in Fort Frolic, like the one where he first introduces himself, and the one where he kills Fitzpatrick (whose few lines are also just perfect). He also has one of my favourite diaries; I thought 'The Wild Bunny' was hilarious and couldn't get it out of my head upon picking it up.
I also enjoyed McDonagh's bits. The cockney-esque accent may have been laid on thick, but it was well executed and I liked following the story of his character. I always looked forward to his ones after getting the very first one in Medical, right up to his last outside Ryan's office.
Other favourite diaries of mine include the final Steinman one ('Doctor, stop cutting...!') and Papa Suchong's 'Mind Control Test', with the puppy. Those were brutal.
