So I decided to finally take out my old floppy drive and replace it with a new card reader. About time right! Anyways, since I unplugged it, every time I boot up my computer it gives me this error saying something along the lines of: floppy disk error, probably referring to the fact that my drive can no longer be detected; however all I have to do is press f1 to continue when this error shows up in order to load up XP. So this may not sound like much of a problem, but it's getting quite annoying and I'm pretty sure a reformat isn't going to fix this as it involves my bios I believe, but I'm so genius. This is probably another one of those stupid questions that I post annually, or bi-annually... I don't know, either way, any and all help in getting this figured out will be greatly appreciated, I just don't want to deal with this nagging error ever again...:flame:

If necessary, my Mobo is an EVGA 680i Model Number:122-CK-NF68-AR

First off, no question is stupid, anyone that tells you otherwise, tell them to F**k off. You are right, Reformatting will not fix this. It's a setting that must be made in the Bios. Yes, you may need to go into the Bios of your PC to disable the Floppy Drive. Very simple to do. Another way, is to follow the steps I list out below. From what it looks like, your motherboard enables you to make changes while the PC is up & running. After the changes are made, you'll of course need to reboot.

Here is the Link to download the manual for the motherboard if you don't have it.
http://www.evga.com/support/manuals/

Now to disable the Floppy, open the PDF file you just downloaded (This is the manual to your motherboard) & scroll down until you find "Boot Up Setting" On my end, thats Pages 129-131. This will enable to you disable/enable your drives & their boot order. You can also disable the drive all together if you want.

See where is states: "Boot Up Floppy seek" Disable this & reboot. Do you still have the problem now?

If you try to disable the Floppy Drive via this way & you are still unable to, then you might want to try to actually disable it via the Bios. I'm not sure for your model, but a common key to be pressed to enter the Bios while your PC is trying to Post, is either the "F2" key or the "Del" key. You can also watch the very first screen that pops up when you turn on your PC & it'll tell you how to enter "Setup" or "Bios". Some otherboards are different than others. Often times, the very first screen that you'll come to when you enter the Bios will be the screen where you can disable the drive. All depends on the options. If not there, just look around at the different options. No changes will be made simply by looking around in the Bios & if you do make a change you don't want to, when you exit out, simply click on "Discard changes & exit" or any option of that nature that your motherboard has.

Let us know how it goes.

I just tried using the software inside of windows to fix it(it's called nvidia ntune). It didn't work when I disabled the floppy seek option. But I wrote down the error exactly as it says:"Floppy disk(s) fail (40)", I looked this up on Google and I guess it's somewhat common, I'm going to try going into my bios to try and fix it I guess. I'll update you guys on if I'm able to figure it out. Thanks.

*update* So in order the fix the problem I went into the bios and changed the value under the sub-menu "Drive A" from 3.5" or something to "none" I guess that means that it was going to try to detect some drive utilizing the fdd plug-in when there was none. At least the fix was a lot less time consuming that I thought it would be.

Thanks for the help MRG.

Glad to hear the problems fixed. That error message you got, is the generic message you'll get when the Bios detects that there is either a problem with the floppy drive or that it's not connected.

Anyways Glad it's fixed.
