FEAR vs. Hl2 debate

About a week ago, i got the FEAR demo. First thoughts were wow, how does it look that good? How does the AI know to do that? Scarier than Ravenholm! Then it dawned to me. Maybe FEAR will become better than Hl2? You choose.

Meh, I don't think it will be ALL TOGETHER better. Some parts will be better than Half-Life 2, as Half-life 2 will have some more than FEAR.

i really like F.E.A.R, but the cool thing about HL2 is..well..it actually runs at a good framerate at high detail and high resolutions. if FEAR could do this i would be more stoked about the game. x800xt here too.

Ohh damn you cant compare these two. Fear vs. DOOM3 would be fair but not HL2, HL2 wins in alot of ways, looks much better than Fear graphics wise, The Fear maps are shit, looks like 3rd party maps. HL2 has so much more details than Fear.

But if you did compare them with how scary they are Fear beets everything but itll never beat Alien vs. Predator

Point, my specs (in sig) run it at 800 by 600 medium quality just for a steady framerate. And Yes, AVP made me sh** my pants.
Note: It doesnt help either my motherboard only supports x4 on my 9800

How can you compare half life 2? its just not the graphics thats so great! the story, the dept feeling, feeling liek you are IT, the gordon freeman! thats what halflife is good about! you dare challange half life to this, simple game? !!

I felt like I was the guy in F.E.A.R. I was tensed, afraid of something happening around the next corner, trying to be aware of the enemies around me. I was also thinking up some well thought strategies.

In Half-Life 2, I thought up half assed strategies. The story in Half-Life 2 is undoubtly better then F.E.A.R. though. Storyline makes up most of the game IMO.

I ran F.E.A.R. on pratically all medium settings, and it ran smoother then Half-Life 2, it also looked more decent. (HL2 didn't have max settings on.)
I did this on a Radeon 9600.
Just don't turn up lights and you are fine.

FEAR relies on cheap scares and trying to shock the player. I don't consider that good gameplay. :|

The problem is I'm so jaded with "scary" FPS that they aren't scary at all. DOOM 3 wasn't scary to me, neither was FEAR, neither was ravenholme.

fear i admit is good, but is nothing compared to the long lived half life 2. the half assed story of fear is terrible, good good gameplay, graphics, and such id say

i like hl2 for the engine and the mods it produces. the actual game was pretty bad, i thought. i got the silver package for dod, css, hl2dm, etc. not for regular hl2.

i think fear will be a lot more fun but lack a lot of the replay value that hl2 has.

To compare Fear to HL2 is ok..what would be better is Fear to Doom 3 since Fear has almost the same graphics engine..look at the models of the people among other things.

Ok. I think Fear has a better atmosphere, but half-life 2 still takes the win for graphics. Physics is almost a tie. I was really impressed with the physics in Fear..also the effects are spectacular. Half-life 2 I think has the best physics. I would have to play the Fear demo to be sure..but I'm sure as hell that Fear will be a great game to play..hopefully its a long game and has a great story line.

Somehow, the demo reminded me of Deus Ex Invisible War.

I've yet to play enough to be able to declare that "and like Deus Ex Invisible War, it has a lot of similarities with Steaming Dog-s**t", but I can't see myself buying this. The level design and gameplay was so dull that my monitor now gives off 50% of the light that it used to.

Really? Bar the neat slow motion effects and bouncing particles I thought FEAR looked rather drab and boring. It certainly doesn't look bad, but I could think of a dozen recent games which look a whole lot better.

i think fear will be a fun game judging from the demo.
Fear is ment to scare you though, half-life 2 isn't.

I liked HL2 a lot. It will be hard to beat it in my book. At least FEAR looks like what Doom3 should have been mixed with slow-mo.

Did anyone play it with everything turned on all the way? I was probably at ~20 fps with everything on full, and it looked very good indeed. I play HL2 at 1920x1200 with everything on full and this was, in my opinion (would only go up to 1600x1200) comparable to HL2. Did you see the water? Very nice.

The AI is (in my opinion) good in this game. Substantially better than HL2.

Giving HL2 the win because it's a favorite of yours for one reason or another is an awesome argument. Giving HL2 the win because you don't like scary games anymore is another awesome argument. Giving HL2 the win because it has an established mod community compared to a recently released demo takes the cake. I think F.E.A.R (the demo, don't know about the game) has comparable graphics to HL2 with superior AI. HL2 does let you play at the higher resolutions with lower-end systems than F.E.A.R. will, so points for the Source engine.

Which do I think is better? HL2, because I'm a raving fanboy. :bounce:

You can't compare a 30 minute demo which is made up of little pieces of different levels stuck together to a full game. FEAR does however take a nice big shit on the source engine from a technological standpoint.
