When using any strength of AA in HL2, many of the lines that are supposed to be smooth end up looking even more jarring than before. For instance, let us say that there is a crack in the wall. With no AA, it is slightly jagged, as would be expected. With AA, the jaggies are smoothed, but replaces with alternating white lines that flicker and I move forward and backwards.
A similar problem happens with a rope in the distance. At certain angles, sections of the rope will seem to disappear. With no AA, the problem vanishes.
Maybe this is just a downfall of AA, but I see this happening (albeit to a lesser degree) in other games as well, and I don't remember my old GeForce 3 doing it (of course, AA was practically unplayable on that card, so that's beside the point).
I have a 9800 Pro with the Catalyst 4.12 drivers.
