Weird problems I've been having... Whenever I have a open / save window open, it lists all the file by size, largest to smallest, along with all the sub folders at the end of the list. I can right click and select 'sort by name', but once I go to a new folder, it's back to by size. There's no way to save it. It's only when theres a open / save window, the accuall folders are listed correctly. I've checked for any sort of option for this, but I can't find any.

I'm sure many of you are just thinking "click sort by name"... I do that.. works, but won't save.

This is just being verry anyoing and wondering if anyone knows a fix.

Assuming you're under XP, go to any folder and click Tools > Folder Options. Hit the view tab and scroll down until you see "Remember each folder's view settings (right under the 2nd set of radio buttons) and make sure it's checked. If it already is, then I don't know. Hope this helps.

XP, by default, only remembers 400 folder options. You can alter the registry to allow it to remember up to 8000. Just put your question into google, and you should find one of the many sites that explain how to do it. You need to create & change DWord values and bags or something. I did it ages ago, so I can't remember exactly what they were called. It's not hard.

Just don't screw it up!

I did the searching for you (and whoever else wants the information, including myself) and found this. As always, make sure you back up your entire registry before you go digging and altering it.

Open RegEdit and navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
If there is anything named "BagMRU", delete it.
If there is anything named "Bags", delete it.
Look for a value named "BagMRU Size". If there isn't one, create one by rightclicking and selecting New DWORD Value. Give it a high value (such as 50000) in decimal format. Now navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
and repeat the same steps.

It will forget all folder view settings up until then (sort of a reset), but should remember all that you change afterwards.

Just did that, and it didn't seem to change anything. Thanks though.

Might just format and hope it's not the same then.

EDIT-
I take that back, I noticed where there are folders where their settings are gone (ued to be thumbnails, now their icons)... But I still have the same problem with open / save windows.

You can use a program called Tweak UI Powertoy, which will get XP to do what you want. It works fine, and I used it a while ago to fix a problem just like that (all my photoshop etc open/save dialogs would open in list, instead of thumbnails) and that program sorted it. I like to get to the root of a problem though, and not just patch it up with something (even if the patch works fine). My problem, it turned out, was that my main "my pictures" folder was not in "my documents". I don't know why that made a difference, but it did, and now all my picture open / save dialogs open in thumbnail view.

Anyway, get Tweak UI. It can be real handy for all sorts of things.
