Well, I finally managed to download SS2 from the Underdogs... had to get a bittorrent client (a bad one, as it turned out) and leave my computer on and connected for about 36 hours...

Now, I've got the Rebirth model mod (and boy, does it ever make a difference) and I've also downloaded that textures mod (though I've not installed it yet)... are there any others I should get?

And does anyone have any tips gameplay-wise? So far, I've learned that it can be better to whack something slow with a wrench than to shoot it...

Get some hacking skills, very important, and if you like to play like a casual FPS forget the psychic abilities and concentrate on tech and marine skills :)

Yes, avoid the psychic abilities for now and concenrate on weapons and hacking, they're more useful. :)

Right... the research function is fun, too, I found. Reminds me of XCom...

I've yet to play it with the rebirth model mod and the texture updates. When I last looked they were incomplete or something. Will have to check it out at some point then.

The Rebirth mod apparently isn't actually complete, but it's got:

- Dead crew members of the Von Braun and the Rickenbacker.
- Ghosts
- Many Hybrid with Pipe
- Many Hybrid with Shotgun
- Many Hybrid with Grenades
- Midwife
- Cyborg Assassin

... and I don't think it's been updated for a while...

Dunno about the texture mod.

While the rebirth mod is great, i would say play it without it first, the models dont seem as intimidating as the originals.

Other than that, keep checking behind you, worm guys like to sneak up on you, always have a gun thats Normal or better, anything less than that likes to jam at inappropriate moments. Always hack cameras and then destroy them, that way worm guys dont see it happen.

less talk, more play!

invest in more inventory space asap, as well as hacking skills. did you choose to be psi-ops/marines? well depends on what you choose.

anyway, best for you to play through it organically and pick things up as you go along.

another tip: invest in some adult nappies.

man, i have no luck with this game.

once i got it installed, but 90% of the way through it crashed and deleted all my saves :(

im trying to play it again, but it never stops crashing XD.

It took me about an hours worth of tinkering to make not crash when i click new game, now it crashes when i try to join the OSA and when i click multiplayer :p (and all the model pack does is remove all models from the game!)

could you pm me the links to the files and steps you took to get the game working on xp? i really wanna finish it this time.

I just downloaded this and i can't get it to work.. Brian, are you using XP ? If you are, say in here/pm me how you got it to work, mine keeps coming up with an Error Report on Options or Start Game....

Did you try compatibility mode?

Yes it still crashes, bed time for me, il check back here in the morning... i hope someone can help.

I got SS2 from the Underdogs as well, but whenever I try to play it, I get an error say my Direct3d device does not accurate report texture memory usage :( I've got a 9600xt btw. I've heard so much about this game, and I want the experience.

Ya, I was wondering if there was an XP fix as I'd like to try it.

SS2 only works on XP if you patch it.

It's more fun to find out things on your own.

okay 3 things must be done before the game will work at all.
1. compatabilty modes must be used
2. create a file name "user.cfg" and put the text "safe_texture_manager" in it
3.set the processor affinity in windows task manager so it only uses one.

the underdogs version works a lot better than the other ones ive tried :)

sorry for the double post, but theres one more step i found that solved all my problems :D:bounce::D

disable the visual themes!

pitty i cant get the graphics packs to work....

All I had to do to fix the "D3D texture memory" thingy was put in that "safe_texture_manager" thing.

Oh, and to get the model upgrade to work properly, unzip the file, put the "mesh" folder into your system shock game directory.

Then make a new folder in the game directory called "res", and move all files that end with ".crf" into it. Open your "install.cfg" file in notepad and edit the line that (since you have the hacked Underdogs version) should read "resname_base ." to "resname_base .\res".

Now it should run with the cool models.

Great Tip #1: Make sure you know what each single enemy sounds like when "Patroling" If you can recognise what they sound like as they walk around then you'll be able to quickly switch ammo-types / guns to better suit that enemy. (For example if you hear a zombie moving and groaning switch to Anti-Personel bullets but as soon as you hear a midwife (Weird female voices that are heavilly distorted via computer) switch to Armor-Piercing) Using that shouldn't cause you that much trouble. Oh and the Pistol is the most useful weapon in the game, that is until you get the Rifle.

I modified my pistol! Now, instead of only carrying ten bullets, it only carries ten bullets! Ten bullets being all the bullets that I have...

well...the way treats are trickled down to you is perfect in my opinion. there's a perfect balance between hard work and reward. and it's not like SS2 is a run and gun sort of game, it paces you through it.

I like the melee aspect. That wrench works rather nicely against the Many Hybrids carrying pipes...

Brawn Booster + Wrench = lotsa dead things.

I think there was an operating system upgrade called Lethal Weapon that increases melee damage... combined with Brawn Booster and some research, the wrench will hurt.

Of course, once you get a better melee weapon...
