I'm going to formate my harddrive tomorow becuse of it running slow and lagy becuse of programs i dont want.

Anyone know where i can download a good firewall. one that doesent interfere with MP games.

And an anti virus program which is free to downloade.

And a anti spy ware program. I use Ad-Awere, which is good, but the things that it delets just keep comming back. Andy one know a program where this doesent hapopen? Also needs to be free.

I'd going to dl these to my secondary harddrive and then install them before i install internett. So those little buggers wount come in :naughty: .........I hope :(

Thanks in advance

Zonealarm for the Firewall. And for virus scanner, you can download a program called Stinger made by McAfee, but it can only scan for viruses, it's not a program you can run in the background to make sure no viruses get in. I've heard very good things about a program called AVG Anti-Virus, and it seems to have all the important features of the Norton and McAfee anti-virus programs you pay for. As for anti-spyware/adware, a lot of people use Spybot, I use SpySweeper. Spysweeper also runs in the background to make sure no spyware/adware gets in, and I don't know if Spybot does put I think it would. Spysweeper also has couple other "shields" active, one prevents the Windows Messenger service from running so it can't spam you, and another prevents bad programs from integrating themselves in Internet Explorer. There's a couple others, but I can't remember them. All of these are free of course. Just search for all of these in Google.

DO NOT USE ZONALARM

i would recommend Sygate

zonealarm will screw up your network, I could never get a LAN to work, we tried EVERYTHING.. Until I tried uninstalling (yes we even had to uninstall it) to get it to work

Sygate is better. no contest.
AVG for antivirus is fine. Spy bot is pretty good

Bosox - bullet points are your friend ;) Otherwise good recommendations.

For spyware, I personally use adaware and spybot. Those two take out the majority of spyware right now, and they are free.

Firefox is a good replacement browser. Stops those IE exploits before they ever happen.

In older versions of ZoneAlarm, it was as simple as opening a few UDP ports

In the latest versions, it works hassle free with networks.

Steer clear of AVG Antivirus. Its protection is crap. It's one of the worst antivirus programs you can download.

Get avast!, there's a free version, and it borders on decent to good.

well, as I said, my experience with zonealarm: it had to be *uninstalled* to let me network. Sygate is still a much nicer firewall imho, the rulesets you can make are neat
I agree that AVG is probably bad. I'm smart enough not to get a lot of viruses in the first place, so a weak line of defense is alright. Just watch your msconfig and you should be ok.
I'll look into avast!... thanks shuzer.

any reason why?

I use G Data Antivirus 2k4. Great AV, runs on two engines engines. KAV and BD engines. For spyware and adware i use pest patrol.

http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?avg.xml

It's ranked pretty low in terms of protection. Virus Bulletin is a very helpful site

Reviewing avast! now, it's ranked pretty low too.. hrm.

EERGG... time to look for a serial number...

"avast! Home is now free of charge for HOME users..."

Hmm I heard about it in I think a Maximum PC review and they gave it a 9/10. Same score they gave Norton, McAfee got a 6/10. And I have Zonealarm and use a router and it's fine. The only thing is I can't host games online, and I don't know why. Anybody know the problem?

Take a look at its trend though. It has done really well since June of 2003.

True that. Ah well, last time I used it was before June 2003.. last time I looked at that list, it was 95% fails..

Guess it has indeed gotten better

seems like the program nod32 has done well for a long time
