So I'm at work today pottering around, trying to do as little work as possible when suddenly I hear a really, really loud noise, and all the windows of the green house I'm in, shake violently. I wonder what the hell is happening, knowing full well that it was too loud for thunder.

It turns out that a fireworks factory, really near to the Garden Centre where I work caught on fire and blew up. It was pretty scary hearing all these sirens going past and the occasional bang that seemed to literally shake the whole earth beneath us. Before long the entire place was shrouded in smoke and we could barely see anything beyond the end of the car park.

It's even on BBC News and everything: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/southern_counties/6204452.stm

While I was never technically in any danger, it was still pretty scary, and quite worrying for a couple of the staff who have families near there.

So yeah, I had quite an interesting day today.

Did you at least get any pictures/video? You have to admit, it probably looked pretty sweet...besides the feeling of death.

firework factory fires are freakishly scary. It's like a huge ****ing multi block bomb just waiting to go off at the right time.

Haha, you live right near it? I've been watching it on Sky news all day, from that helicopter camera, I must say it's been a very pretty fire. How close are they to putting the fire out?

I didn't have my camera phone on me, my last one got broken because I took it to work and it didn't really handle all the heavy lifting or wading through water or whatever. There are pictures on various news sites.

I live like 4 miles away from it, and work is about half a mile away. All the fireworks have stopped now apparently. And the firefighters can actually start to put the fire out.

Firework fires are the best. Instead of one big mushroom blast, you get fancy designs and sweet colors. If I were you I woulda run over there and started dancing underneath the lovely explosions.

ummmmm, if you look at the news article, theres a big picture of a mushroom cloud.....

wow the smell in that area must be beautifull right now.
To bad 2 people got killed.

Dude... firework factories can have GIGANTIC explosions.

Look near the end of that thing... that's not fancy designs and sweet colors... that's a deadly blast as if a military bomb went off and took out the whole neighborhood.

I normally wouldn't post this video... because I believe the guy died in the second blast(at least that's what I heard), but I needed to illustrate the extremely disastrous results that can happen from a fireworks factory explosion.

Been there, done that, leveled a city block:

Heh, irony:

i would imagine it looked an awful like the ending of V for Vendetta

Sucks that some firefighters died though :(

I was at my cousins one day and they were launching some fire works. All the fireworks were in a bag(a lot of em too)....... well after about our 7th one we lit... a spark went into the bag and they all started!!

Was sweet.

lol I've done that before, except it was on purpose

That video raziaar posted had the sweet fireworks I would have danced to! If I die from the next explosion, I would die happy!

Sucks that the camera man died though... although it was pretty stupid of him to not get further away.

Also, at least it wasnt Nitro Glycerin

EDIT: or a depth charge

I've seen that depth charge one before, and wish I knew more about it.

I'm starting to wonder if that description is true.

Depth Charge Description said:
A biology teacher from my school is in the navy. These are the sort of things he gets up to in his spare time!
The black dust is from a sunken WWII barge which they didn't know was there and was filled with 10 tonnes of explosives. They were only trying to clear mines!

That's what it's based off, isn't it?

Poor guys. I wonder - were the walls massively reinforced and the roof extremely light?

I would imagine that the firework factiry explosion would NOT be pretty colours, but instead it is a massive gunpowder explosion... arn't the chemicals (such as copper sulphate...) used to colour the fire added post production? If so... it would just be an extremely large blast when the fire hit the gunpowder stores, or whatever they use in fireworks.

Copper when burned, turns green, total conclusion, the placed looked like the reactor was up and HL2 aftermath

Still colourful, so i win. Yay i want me cookie.

Imagine, one spark can cause thousands of death

For the want to a nail, a horseshoe was lost, for the want of a horseshoe a steed was delayed, for the want to a delayed steed a message was not delivered, for the want of an undelivered message, the war was lost and the empire fell.

I was talking about Cu(II)SO4... so obviously cupric.

Jesus! that explosion was insanely close.. hope that person filiming on the roof was ok :(

..Jeez. Now I'm really upset. Turns out one of the firemen who died was one of my friends' friends' dad. I've met him and everything.

;(

Oh, i'm sorry to hear that Reginald :(
