Ive been wondering what game I should get, now that I upgraded my computer and can play any game now at max settings. I kinda want to test the system out, so I was thinking maybe COD2. But I also was thinking of FEAR, AOE3. Originally I bought the stuff thinking that Oblivion would come out this month or next, and I would have just waited for that, but then like the day after I ordered my stuff, They announced the delay :(

So yeah, which game would you recommend?

How long is the singleplayer? Is it as good as the originals? And how about MP, is that about the same as the first one? I didnt really like mp in the first one, but looooooooovvvvvveeeeeddddd the single player.

I don't have it yet, but some people I know do and they love it, plenty of SP too.

SP for COD2 is a lot shorter than COD1's SP but all of it is good whereas COD1's SP got boring during the russian campaign especially because you became a lone gunman.

In COD2 you will always have allies fighting along side you.

I'd say FEAR for testing out your machine. Still lags mine at all maxed out and I spent $1600 on it... D:

I played the cod2 demo and the iron sight on the rifle is so big it takes up 2000000000% of your screen so you cant see anything to shoot. Other than that it was good when I managed to shoot stuff.

Ah, the power of GTX, this'll last me a hefty 4+ years.

cod2: great solid game with great graphics.

aoe3: fun, awesome graphics and single player is actually pretty good.

fear: great graphics, horrible level design, bad story but boy is it fun (killing in slow-mo, hand-to-hand and so on).

uh, i don't think i made it any easier but i would probably go with .. cod2 for mp, maybe :x

Quake 4 on ultra quality.
FEAR
AOE3
X3 can take a lot of system power in places.

COD2 is "OK". It is incredibly frustrating (I'm playing on highest difficulty, that could be why). The germans don't stop respawning in a certain area till you get passed a certain place, which ruins the game for me. It becomes trial-and-error sometimes, especially in the Russian mission where you have to run up to a tank and plant explosives on it. The tank keeps moving around so that it is always facing you. Goddamit!

I agree. I like to feel as though I have taken a portion of the scum out, not that theres a lot of crap coming my way and I need to find a way to dodge it to get past this part.

I wonder if there's any commercially available machine out there that can handle F.E.A.R at max settings at 2048*1536

CoD2 isn't that demanding, I can run it maxed out w/ 4x aa and I get about 30fps, and my machine isn't the most up to date. I would say either FEAR or Black and White 2

Ooooh yeah, Black and White 2 is a very nice looking game. Sometimes i just like to put my view in a nice position and just sit back and watch my town go about its business :)

I have battlefield 2. Its not that demanding, I could run it on high in 1024X768 with 2x aa and still get good framerates. But I will no doubt be playing it on this computer.

My sentiments exactly. I am sure you have a wonderful new machine, but unless you have something along the lines of dual 7800 GTXs running, I imagine you won't be able to play FEAR with the max settings. Monolith have created a beast of an engine!

Don't believe me? See what they had to say about the engine over at Anandtech. Here are some quotes:

For graphics, FEAR paves the way for a new generation of games, and is also the first game able to bring the highest powered cards available to their knees when played at its full graphical potential.

while we aren't saying that this is the best game out now by any means, we are saying that it is probably the most significant, given how graphically demanding it is.

it's easy to play it at max settings, just not insane resolutions like 2048 x 1536; which is the case for hl2/d3/q4 and others.

F.E.A.R for sure. GREAT game, GREAT GFX.

I know how you feel man....

FEAR if you want to test your system. Plus it's has awesome singleplayer.
Battlefield 2 can also be quite heavy with all setting on max, even tough it runs on lower end computers as well.

FEAR's graphics aren't anything special/demanding.

Don't be absurd. Please see my previous post in this thread (and actually RTFA this time). :)

Sounds like Fear is my next game then. I might ask for one of the other two for christmas. Is AOE3 as good as the first two? I loved the first two, and am actually playing them right now. I played the demo but it seemed kinda wierd, I didnt play for long enough to tell though.

It doesn't have bad level design at all and the story is no more interesting than any other FPS, but it's a damn lot scarier than any other FPS, which makes you not care about the story.

I'd go with FEAR for testing your PC, it has superb graphics regardless of what any of these people say. Although I can run it quite happily on pretty much full max graphics with 2xaa/4xaf at 1024x780 with 1gb ddr400, 2.6amd and x800pro....not only will it test your PC, its SP is amazing.
