Could somebody please offer some advice - I installed HL2 and did the updates through Steam. Initially the sound was working with the game, at least in the opening dialog when I initially started a new game. For reasons which I won't go in to now, I uninstalled the game, then reinstalled it. Now the sound will not work in HL2 or Counter Strike. Everything else seems to work fine. The problem is not related to my system, nor with other games I play. I tried configuring the Audio tab in the HL2 setup, changing the # of speaker selection, and making sure the sound was in fact turned on. If I turn the speaker volume on my speakers all the way up, I can faintly hear the sound of the game. But at normal settings, there is only silence. Does anybody have any idea whats up? I know that the issue is not system related. Thanks for any advice.

Try "snd_restart" in the console.

EDIT : Try this too :

'playvol' (Play a sound at a specified volume.)

EDIT2 : AHA!

'volume' (Sound volume)
Default value = 1.

Thanks BeerDude for the suggestions. Unfortunately I will have to wait till tomorrow to try them, as I'm not currently around the computer.
In the console, should I type EDIT, EDIT2? Should I actually type AHA! ? I have very limited experience in the console. Any clarifications/simplifications are greatly appreciated :-)
Also, I forgot to mention that when I originally loaded the game and set up the Steam account and type in my CD key code, Steam then decrypted the HL2 files. After reinstalling the game again and signing into the existing Steam user account, the decrypting process didn't take place. I would think that since I reloaded the game again, that the files would need to be decrypted? I wondered if this could be the reason why the game sound is not working? Any thoughts on this?
Thank you.

You type 'volume' (without the quotation marks). If it says 'Volume = 0' then type 'Volume 1' (again without quotation).

No, you don't have to type EDIT or EDIT2. Just the stuff between quotes. Example :
For changing sound volume type :

"volume 1"

In the console. Do not type in the "" (quote) marks.
You can also try a higher value than 1 and see if it makes a difference. (Just don't type in 8000, because I think your speakers will explode then :p)

And you can validate your files if you want to be sure everything is complete.
Validation link : steam://validate/220

Thanks for the suggestions. Hmmmm.... how do I bring up the console? I'm hitting the tilda key but nothing is coming up. I didn't see anything in the setup to designate a console access key. How do you start the game in the console? I apologize for the newbie questions :cheese:

To enable console, you'll need to go into Options, then Keyboard, then Advanced. When in there, tick the box that says something along the lines of: Enable developer console (~).

Thanks for the tips. I appreciate it. When I went into the advanced settings on the keyboard and checked the radio box for the console, the sound automatically started working. *Shrug* Strange. Oh well, the sound is working now. Thanks again everyone for the help.
