First off all:
I have not read all of the other posts about this and I do not know if someone has already posted this.

I had about every possible problems with Half-Life 2 that the steam purchasers have had. I had the wire-frame textures, the purple textures, and the memory faults that caused the game to crash at random times and did not allow me to proceed past the first checkpoint (first "loading" screen).

I had tried everything. Different drivers (I have a Radeon 9600XT and I tried the ATI, DNA, TCcomputer (or whatever)) and nothing would help. I removed the game from my games list and "re-downloaded it". All to no avail. I was getting EXTREMELY frustrated.

Here is what I did to fix it:

I removed the game from my games list. Then I went into my steamapps in the Steam folder in my computer and removed all the .gcf files that related to the source engine or half-life 2. (I didn't have to remove the counter-strike: source files) After that I went into my folder (in my case [email protected] folder) and removed the Half-Life2 folder).

These steps are basically used to remove every last piece of HL2 data from my machine. When you click on HL2 and go to game properties it should say 0% downloaded. OTHERWISE THIS MAY NOT WORK. If you just try to "Remove all offline content" it will still say that 74% of the game is still there. The reason this does not fix the memory or texture problems is because they deal with the source engine, not "necessarily" the actual game.

I know this is a bit extreme, but it worked for me, I DID have to re-download the entire game, but it is a small price to play for this awesome shooter. If you can deal with waiting for Valve to release some type of patch to fix this, then by all means do, as this takes CONSIDERABLE time to re-download.

Good luck, hope this works for everyone.

:( It won't let me edit. Oh well, here is a little P.S.
EDIT: For those who don't know, you can easily back up your saved games from your half-life2 folder. I forget the name of the exact folder but it is something very obvious, like SAVE or SAVED GAMES. Just copy that to the desktop or something and then when you have finished re-downloading the game, place it back in the HL2 folder.

i had/have a problem simalar and i didnt know how to make HL2 start back a 0% so i just deleated the entire steam dir. and reinstalled

after waiting for hl2 to re-DL it worked.... the first time... then it all happened again... this is uber gay
