I can confirm that removing one of my two 512MB memory modules worked, I was then able to re-insert the module into a different slot and it still continued to work where before it would crash.
None of the suggested software tweaks...reinstalling game/deleting .gcf files etc worked, I even reinstalled OS on a new drive and it didnt work. I also tried underclocking my CPU from 2000MHz to 1800MHz, no cigar there either.
My exact error was a crash after only seconds of play or in the main menu:
The instruction at "0x241f8977" referenced memory at "0x013af5c0". The memory could not be "read".
This was also reproducible withing seconds of loading HL:Source but CS:Source would play for up to 30 minutes before crashing (unsure of exact error in case of CS:S)
If you have the exact same error as me I would suggest trying to remove some of then re-jig your memory, I think there are many different errors that are similar, but if your 'instruction at "0xXXXXXXXX" referenced memory at "0xXXXXXXXX". error is the same as mine I would urge you to investigate memory.
Good luck!
