Had problems with HL2 and its frame rates. I'm using XP3200, RadX800XT, 1Gb RAM.

Anyhow, why did I not think of overclocking the FSB?

So, with anybody using A64 and has diabolical performance, consider this. I'm off to enjoy an almost unjerkable HL2 :D

You shouldnt have any problems to begin with... something else is probably wrong; overclocking is just covering the symptoms now.

Well, I'm at a loss to explain it otherwise.
What else is running at the time

is the drive fragmented

is it a slow drive

have you got all the settings way too high and running at really high resolutions

Hey just noticed this guy has been here since may 03. Whats up Ross good to see a fellow elder around here

I have similar issues with my A64 3400+, 1Gb RAM, Radeon 9800 SE setup. It seemed to run fine for me until I benchmarked it and got awful results. People with lower specs were running at higher settings and getting better results.

I plan to reformat and reinstall windows soon, so I'll see if that helps, but in the meantime if anybody has any idea why I'm frequently dropping to 20fps, it'd be appreciated. Practically nothing else is running at the same time, and the drive isn't very crowded.

Also a guide to overclocking the FSB would be useful, since I'm an ignoramus.

Sounds like its most likely going to be memory issues. best thing to try is to make sure you have nothing running in the background that shouldn't be such as applications for hardware that startup when your computer does, that don't need to be started.

Depends on what board you have. What be it?

Dark Elf: My specs are in the post. I have 2 Seagate Barracuda 120Gb drives in RAID 0.

Zeus: Good to see you too budski :D

It's a Via K8M800...er, also shows up as an MSI K8MM-ILSR. Not sure what's what, not very technically inclined to be honest.

Anyway this problem has become something of a moot point, because I've had to resurrect my comp from the land of unbootability since my last post, and I'm now suffering bsod errors all over the place, and I'm yet to transfer my data (including HL2) back to this drive. I'd still appreciate any tips on improving frame rates, or overclocking the FSBus, on the offchance I ever get it restored to working order. Cheers.

Well I found overclocking the FSB to 210 works a treat. This pushed my CPU to 2.31Ghz. However, don't push it any higher because I tried 215 and it crashed the game.

As for your BSOD errors, I have absolutely no idea whats going on.

Thanks for the guide.

regarding BSOD - one format and 3 windows reinstalls later, I'm still getting them. They used to happen whenever I connected to the net. Now they happen whenever I disconnect. This is slightly more convenient than before, but still extremely annoying. Anyway, I'll have to cope for the moment.

RAID 0 does nearly nothing or in most cases, jack shit for performance, for desktops anyways.
