Anybody seen this yet? I saw it yesterday.
I expected it to be mushy, half propaganda but it was freekin amazing.
The storyline was a bit slow, and long, brought up some good points about what we perceive as "heroes" and "good vs evil" etc.
The action-war scenes were some of the best i've seen in a any war-movie... ever..
I recommend this film, since even if you think WW2 -> sucks, then the special effects and gore will keep you busy :P
ps, dont go watch it if you cant take blood :P Clint Eastwood likes to finish off ppl ;)
Kudo's to Clint (gonna but this on DVD when its out :D)

All of my fellow movie snob friends find Clint Eastwood to be pretentious and shitty, but I happen to love him. Both Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby were excellent films. I'm not rushing to see Flags though, I've sort of had enough with war movies.

I read the book. I'll prolly rent it when it's on DVD.

Why would you expect anything propoganda related with Clint Eastwood?

I think I might just wait till it comes out on DVD. Looks good though.

I haven't seen it yet, but I love war movies and Eastwood's not bad.

I've never liked Eastwood as a director, but I will probably be seeing this one soon.

heh, this movie rocks, and the reason i expected a propaganda mushy movie is first of all because of the title:
"Flags of our Fathers", -> it sounds cheeseball. :P

yes it does sound cheesy ..is it another one of those "america fought exclusively in ww2, no one else ..btw the war started on Dec 7 1941" movies? cuz the rest of the world is a little tired of hollywood's take on ww2

i'll wait for video ..and even then I'll see if something else is in ...dont get me wrong I like Clint but as a republican who supported the war I cant get past the idea that the movie pushes a "war is necesary" agenda ..glory and honour in wartime is a myth perpetuated by those that send people to their deaths on foreign battlefields

I THINK it's the exact opposite, actually. Apparently it's about how the guys who raised the flag didn't think they were all that great. I'm not totally sure though.

The movie attacks the stupid propoganda the flag raisers had to do and makes them question if they're heroes or not. You should do a little more research into movies before you judge them stern. Remember how you thought Lord of War was some pro-gun, pro-war film when it was the exact opposite?

And I'm curious as to where Eastwood supported the war. I know he's a Republican, godbless his soul.

I agree, I usually get tired on how all the other 47 allies get ignored in Hollywood -> those were my expectations but the message is actually pretty descent: there are no heroes in war, there are no goodguys + badguys, mankind needs that in order to justify war.
Wouldnt expect that coming from Clint aye ;) :P

I watched this last night. i thought it was going to another WW2 film with lots of insane actions, but i was wrong. this film was about the people who raised the flag at Iwo Jima and those who got wrongly honored and how they felt they should not be heroes. it brings a whole new perspective to the audience because it deals with post war trauma and how people feel humble about their accomplishments.

if u like action or history, go watch this film.

newb...you didn't even see it.its not even about fighting it's about what happend to the people that raised that flag(s)

In just about every thread you post, there is some kind of anti american sentiment.Your attitude is getting old, think of something new to obsess about instead of the U.S....pancakes for exsample.

your whole post is full of BS and misinformation.

DeusExMachinowned!

Everyone likes a good WWII film, because its so easy to pick a side, understand the conflict, and its very polarised and simple. Not depressing like something about a modern movie is, where you're not sure if you're the bad guys or not.

I suppose thats why we're seeing movies like this appear. It fills a hole that exists in the zeitgeist for society today, as you might say.
Its almost as if its an escapist film, when you put it in today's context. I suppose that shows that people (or at least film makers) can see where a universal, unifying source for human conflict exists, and where one doesn't.

Make of that what you will.

damn some of you guys are just itching to jump over my back no matter what I say ..I stated that it was my opinion and that I was afraid it might be a propaganda film NOT that it was ..Ome Vince was the only one who understood where I was coming from ..and Clint a Republican? if you've seen any of his films how can he not be republican?

deusexmachina: he stated that he supported bush in an interview around the the invasion of iraq

Ænema/Lemonchiken/spicytuna: shut up you tool ..you're lucky you keep flying under the mods radar ..what's this the 3rd or 4th time you've snuck back after being perma-banned ..I'd try to avoid shooting my mouth off if I were you ..you cant avoid them forever

Man, every time you post it is about the war in iraq/republicans/bush/US...but even thought the topic has nothing to do with it you continue to go political; can't you ever shut up about politics. THIS IS A ****ING WW2 movie.

To go back on topic, I love World War II movies; I am a HUGE fan of World War II movies. It's really depressing to see no more WW2 movies being made anymore.

Pearl Harbor sucked balls bacause they made it into cliche romance hollywood flick. I wish there was more movies from back in the days like Patton, Ike, Saving Private Ryan. Hope they can get back on track with this movie; But after seeing pearl harbor I got a bad taste in my mouth about the pacific/Japanese campaign type WW2 movies; I would Like to see more European front World War II movies again. ;)

Apparently he filmed a movie back to back with this, following the same events, but from the Japanese perspective. Supposedly they cross over in subtle ways - like in the American one, a yank gets dragged into a Japanese foxhole, and in the Japanese one you see him being dragged off - that kind of thing.

EDIT: Here ya go: Letters From Iwo Jima

shut up kawasaki-bits did you even read what I wrote? ..please point out where I mentioned iraq/bush

I really liked this movie. Although I was disapointed that it wasn't "the next Saving Private Ryan" it was a different kind of movie and I really liked it for what it was. As for Letters From Iwo Gima, I wanna see it if it's anything like this movie.

Well you did say this...

i'll wait for video ..and even then I'll see if something else is in ...dont get me wrong I like Clint but as a republican who supported the war I cant get past the idea that the movie pushes a "war is necesary" agenda ..glory and honour in wartime is a myth perpetuated by those that send people to their deaths on foreign battlefields

I certainly thought that comment was about Iraq... and i'm sure others did too. Considering clint eastwood was just a teenager during world war II.

Unless of course you mean that he shouldn't have supported america's inclusion into world war II? Was it unnecessary for the allies to challenge the Axis?

Besides, clint eastwood isn't even a republican. Yes he's registered as one according to wikipedia, but he is a libertarian and doesn't toe any particular line. I got that bit from wikipedia...

EDIT: Oh and then you also said this later in response to deus.

deusexmachina: he stated that he supported bush in an interview around the the invasion of iraq

Why should Iraq have ANYTHING to do with this movie?

ummm no ..all I said was that as a republican war supporter his movie could be pro-war as in war is necessary because that is the line they usually push (he was a supporter of the war in greneda ..if you dont know why that's relevant you should watch more eastwood movies) ...oh and Clint has made several ww2 movies

look I'm not going to dig up that interview I saw on tv because I wouldnt even know where to begin ...he also said that he's shoot michael moore if he ever came to his ranch ..i've searched for that quote as well and cant find it

EDIT: Oh and then you also said this later in response to deus.

because he asked about clint's support of the war

Why should Iraq have ANYTHING to do with this movie?

where do I say that?

I don't understand what about his films make him more obvious as a Republican. Did you see Million Dollar Baby? All the conservatives jumped over him. And besides, he describes himself as a Libertarian. He was willing to support Gray Davis when he was losing the election.

And honestly, who wouldn't shoot Michael Moore if he came onto their property.

he was referring to the when Moore went to Charelton Heston's house in bowling for columbine

Is this topic about Flags of our Fathers or is it about Stern and the political debate that occurs every time he posts anything?

Its hard to tell.

Agreed, also 90% of his posts are from the politics forum; There's a reason why I wanted the politics forum to be killed off. He rarely goes to the Half-Life 2 section.

Alright everyone, this wasn't meant to turn into an attack stern-athon. I was simply trying to make a point, not open up a door for the rest of you.

lol 90%? you should probably read through all 20,000+ of my posts KarmaKameleon-MitTs ..btw if you really want the politics forum killed off why do you keep reading them? I mean you've obviously read the majority of my posts (which I have every reason to believe you have because of the "90%" figure you pulled out of nowhere) then it stands to reason that something must be compelling you to keep coming back ...and it cant be because of little ol' me, n'est-ce pas KrispyKreme-bitz?

You still don't get do you? *nodds head in disapointment* I've been watching you here post hella more on the Politics forum than any other forum here on hl2.net. You seem to be heavily involved in politics more than any other section.

Theres a few times I would arive there such as me showing my hatred towards hillary clinton because of her policy of voilent video games & her taxes & me trying too tell you about that plane crash into a NYC skyscrapper that it was a Major League Baseball starting pitcher named Cory Lidle that died in that plance crash; but yet you still think it was terrorist attack & Mr. President was on the prowl. :rolling:

Then in this topic you continue to talk about republicans n' shit rather than about the movie; erm Republicans were not in the white house during 1944-1945, it was the democrats. What you said doesn't make sense????

Most of the time (not all the time) you post its including politics; Can't you for once not include politics? Is that to hard to ask?

in fact the mods do know I am here. why are trying to change the subject?
all you do in about 80% of the posts you make is being some kind of anti American BS,totally misinformed you come in this thread, bitching about a movie that you don't know anything about.

uh, wasn't I was the one who stated that the title and movie sounded like a cheeseball propaganda movie, and Stern simply agreed + added to that?
I hate to say this, but in this case i think you guys are nitpicking => making something out of nothing.

Anyways, ontopic, does anybody here remember Windtalkers? Man that was a disappointment, it was like mixing Arnold's "Commando" with Saving Private Ryan. :sniper:

This movie however, although at some points is a bit long, has the best action scenes in it ever, and the message is actually contradicting what the title + trailer suggests.
It talks about there being no heroes in war yadayada.
I recommend this film!
