Ok, I run around 40-60 fps usually, but with 5 or 6 people on screen and a smoke grenade it can drop to 15 or 20. Since I am more worried about winning than looking at nice water, I find myself wishing I could just run it in dx7. Anyone know the command?

Can you just not turn off all the extra's? skybox, bump mapping, spec/reflection and so on. Or is that considered cheating on CS:S heh

I turned everything down, but on a big full server its still to choppy for my taste. I'll try that command.

lower the resolution aswell as the other stuff, turn off shadows, lowest model details, AA and AF all down to nothing. Or get a faster connection if possible, at some point it wont make a difference with the detail.

I want shadows on, sometimes they help in the spotting of the bad guys. Everything else is bottomed out, I got it to about 90 fps with 60 at high load. Not bad at all, now I can function in full servers.

I still cant get it into dx7 mode, but I guess if I cant play with 60 I cant play.

You need to put those same commands into the command line under " Launch properties" and or "launch options" in the steam menu. Just right click on CS Source in the steam menu and go from there. I didn't code the game, but I belive that It needs to what ver of Direct X you want to run before in begins rendering the game, so i don't know if it works from the ingame console or not. I use 8.1 ( -dxlevel 81 ) because it is a good balance between high FPS and ugly gaming.

i dont really know your financial situation, but you can upgrade your video card for about $100 for a pretty decent card that should handle cs:s

or do what i did, i got a new motherboard + cpu + ram + case for about $400 and in a couple of weeks im ordering a new video card... i got the amd athlon 64 3200+ and a gig of ram, i really noticed a massive increase of performance in everything i run.

the command to use while in the game to write into the console (but not while in a server) is "mat_dxlevel **" where ** is the level of choice

What kind of setup did you use to have?
