Today I went to an amusement park. It was awesome. The rollercoasters were amazing.

Later that day, I got thirsty/hungry so I walked up to a local food stand in the park to get something to drink. A lady that could barely speak english greeted me with a smile. So I asked if they served drinks there and she said, "water only". So I walked away, and went to another one. I walked up to the window, and asked if they sold drinks, and again, "water only". I was completely ok with them serving water at these stands, but I was noticing a re-occuring patern. Everyone at these stands could only speak very little english. When I say everyone, I mean EVERYONE. Again, I was completely fine with it, but when I asked for change, they had no idea what I was talking about. For example, I walked up to a hotdog stand, and I had a 10 dollar bill in my hand. I asked if I could have change in singles for this 10 dollars. He had no idea what I just said. I literally had to act it out, and he just shook his head.

Is this common now? I've never been to a place where there were no workers that could actually understand people. All in all, it was a fun day, and thats all that matters.

I work at a fairly large amusement park where students from around the world (but mostly Russia) come to be employed and live in America over the summer. About 40% of the workers there are imported I'd say. However, their English is very good mostly and, even if it isn't perfect, they would have no trouble understanding simple things like that. I have no idea if the park you went to uses the same program (it sounds similar), but I certainly couldn't see any one employing a person without them having an idea how to say or understand the key terms of the job.

Were you at King's Dominion?

Nope. Its called Cedar Point. I've been there 2 other times and had no problems.

Cedar Point is the original park founded by the company Cedar Fair, which owns King's Dominion. So I would guess it's the same program.

Ohh. But it didn't seem like 40%. More like 80-100%. The only stand who wasn't, foreign, was this one Icee stand.

what taco meant to say:

what's the deal with all these minority people lately....don't they know they already have a country of their own. i wish i had a slave.

taco, you racist bastard.

Well different positions might be more concentrated. I highly doubt 80-100% of the employees there are foreign imports.

That made me lol, but thats not what I meant.

Hey, a bunch of my friends are at Cedar Point right now! I'll ask them about it when they get back later today.

Lots of people from Czech Republic work at Cedar Point. Which is awesome.

Sorry? Water only!

The last time I went to Cedar Point 2 years ago I was noticing a lot more foreign employees. (I had been to Cedar point many times before then, I live about 45 minutes away from it)

My sister still goes now and then and she says they're all over.

Yeah this post doesn't really have any point because it's just restating/confirming what was already said in the OP.

I was at an amusment park for a school trip once. It was the end of the day and I wanted to buy some skittles. There was a stand outside the entrance along the wall with alot of candy stuff, so I went up to the ld guy and asked for the Wild Berry Skittles. He just stared at me. After another try, he pointed at a little sign in front of the cash register that said "I am Deaf" and something else. I went, "OH!" and stood there and thought how I could convey to him what I wanted. I pointed at the bag behind him and kept shaking my head when he grabed the wrong one. I finally got it, and was kind of annoyed, but after I walked away I wondered why Knott's Berry Farm would hire a deaf guy a job where he would have to actively address people. They didn't even put a list on the front of what there is to buy that you would point to, it would be so easy to do, I felt sorry for him. :(

I know for sure that at King's Dominion in Virginia, most of the employees there are either Czech or Russian. Every food stand seemed to be staffed with them, which surprised me a lot. A lot of them had the same mis-communication problem as well.

I really don't get this. How did they even manage to get hired there if they can't speak proper English. Especially a job like this which implies frequent communication with costumers.

Lizardizzle, I bet that supposed deaf guy wasn't even deaf. He probably couldn't speak or understand a word of English...

I know exactly what this is like. I've been to Oakwood (It's in Wales).

well he had a sign that SAID he was deaf. If you had read my post, you would have seen that I typed that.

Ignorance! The majority that you saw.
