took you like 20 seconds to reply t.t.t.t.

anyway its liek impossible to find anything on microsoft.com... i search format windows me, and nothing but jibberish shows up

There are a few ways you can do it. Start > Run > type either "cmd" or "command" (not sure for ME). When the DOS prompt appears, type "format C:" and it will ask you if you want to re-format. Replace the C with whatever you have labeled your hard drive with.

Maybe he wants to upgrade his mobo/processor. That, or his comp has been FUBARed.

Do you have the original Windows CD? Pop it in the tray and hit 'restart' and follow the directions on the screen..

Insert your windows disk, enter your bios (usually f4 but differs from machine to machine) and select to boot from your cd drive. You will be shown particians and it's pretty much self explamitory from that. Press blah key to clear "X" partician. Then select partician to reinstall windows to (with a clean slate)

Surely formatting from inside Windows is a really bad idea?

Only if you really wanna format the OS drive. lol

OK, to reformat and then reinstall windows, you must boot from a CDROM, so make sure you have your BIOS setup for that. 1st boot device=CDROM.
DO NOT PUT WINDOWS ME BACK ON YOUR PC!! , It is trully a bad OS, widely recognised as the bastard child. If you have to, I would rather see you go to back to Windows 98SE, or Windows 2000. but XP would be better. But look I am a very serious about this do not use ME under any circumstances.

Just make sure you have all your files backed up before you reformat... Otherwise, you won't be happy when you boot up again :)
