Frame rate improvement

Please post your tips here.

What can I do to improve frame rate?
When I first got CS:S the FR was smooth all the time, now it's often below 30 which makes it really painful to play.
But it seems as though the FR is server dependant as on some servers I have a nice smooth FR and on other their in the teens.

So, what can I do?

I have defragged the harddrive.

Turning down the details does not matter same crappy FR. As I said the FR was good when the game was new. Seems to have gotten worse for every patch

you can get a 40fps boost if you have a dx9.0 card. if so, right click cs:s in 'play games' > properties > launch options > type "-dxlevel 81" > close > ok > start cs:s > quit cs:s (yes it's needed) > properties > lauch options > remove "-dxlevel 81" > close > ok > start cs:s > configure your video options > have fun.

You might do a stress test before and after the tweak, so you can see your improvement.

Remember, this only does something of you have a high-end (sorta) dx9.0 card.

Gives 5-10 improvement but must be done for each map

For online get a better connection because as they add more stuff to css i would say it will get slower ;0(

Performance warning: Mark bone 'ValveBiped.Bip01_L_Hand' in model 'player/terror.mdl' as being used by bone merge in the .qc!

...but what can I do about it?

lol i had that 2,still do i think,i checked my console b4 presuming that message was the prob of my shit performance but after awhile my performannce improved,i'm pretty sure i still have this message though

yo brick...I got an x800 xt and I tried your trick....I didnt notice any difference.

After the latest Patch my PC feels 'choppy' while playing CS:S/HL2.

I NEVER had a problem with steam/hl2/cs:s/hl2:dm but now I get 2 Problems:

1) Sometimes my games FREEZES for like 5-10 secs then it comes back to normal, but sometimes I have to reboot.

2) My FPS dropped down quite a bit and now I HARDLY get above 40fps on an Open area.

I even reformatted but it didn't help

SPECS:

AMD64 3400+
1Gig Ram
BFG 6800GT OC
2x 200G WD SATA HDD
Using 66.93 Drivers ( I tried other drivers still same prob)

My PC used to run Silky Smooth before the last patch.

I just did the VST and I get 185 fps, I don't know what's going on :|

I get the same choppyness after the last patch, FPS and ping are fine, the movement of the screen just isn't that smooth. In the past I could tweak the cl_smooth command to eliminate it, but it doesn't seem to do anything now

I'm sure my hit reg is buggered too, but that's always subjective.

Sounds pretty much like my problem... I think I'll reinstall the game to see if that helps.

When i upgraded to catalyst 5.2 my CS:S started to get stuttery without me even changing anything so i went back to good ol' 5.1 and now everything works.

Worked for me, and I have a rad 9600XT 256mb.

And you don't really need the trick right? I mean, an X800xt should run it fine.

you know I have the x800 xt and no everything does run fine. I mean it's great. But you know i hear these stories about 100+ average frame rates and I get like 70 for average. I feel like my card is elite yet I dont get these crazy high frame rates. I mean what I get is OK but it can always be better. What am I doing different then these ppl who get 100+ fps???

does anyone know how to increase a games/programs cpu priority,when i press ctrl-alt-del it brings up the processes running and i can change their priority to high,above normal etc but is their any way of starting cs or other games with a higher prority

Or you can just open the console (also works ingame!) and type "mat_dxlevel 81" for example. You just have to wait a few seconds until the graphics have reinitialized but that's it.

Possible values are 70, 81, and 90.

dont flame me or get all nasty just s****** to yourself if you have to i cant hear it

but sound plays a part in your fps not a large one but a part none the less (and i know this is true)if you have a crap or well not crap but not brilliant chipset on your mobo and are using on board sound your fps will suffer same as a not so good sound card.
lag can play a small part aswell depending on if there is vast amounts of it so picking a good server can help you a lot plus you proberbly know this but latest drivers installed can do wounders aswell.
if you dont believe me about the sound turn your on board sound of and play cs for a little you will see a small imrovement then you know it is wise to invest in a decent sound card unless of course you allready own one

Since the new Patch my FPS are Back to Normal! No more freezing! Gameplay feels smooth again!!!!!

I even scored almost 40 more FPS in the VST! :afro:

P.S. I didn't change anything
