hi all... is low framerate caused by ram memory?

here's my system:

2.4 Gigahertz
256 mb ram
ati radeon 9250 256 mb

if it is caused also by videocard what makes the most difference?

Get more ram!!! Good god man! Your card has as much ram as your system!

Well, now that I got that out of my system...
Your video card has 256 MB, aside from being the lower-end version of the card it's decent, but the RAM is a situation far more dire.
See this thread
He went from 512 to 1 GB and saw drastic improvements. I think I've said enough.

My friend was having problems playing hl2 with 512MB of RAM he went to a Gig and hasn't had a problem since.

Framerates are generated by the Video Card if I'm not mistaken.

okay ill try that... so videocard hasnt got to do much with framerate?

???? how can that ram memory increases game quality and videocard increases framerate? i dont get it

The game will not look better if you buy more RAM, it will only get less choppierer (if that's a word). For some people, buying 1 GB RAM even fixed the sound stuttering. If your systems starts to stutter once you get into a new area, it means it has to unload the data from the previous area to make room to load the data from the new area, making things choppy. More RAM means more space, so there will be less stuttering throught the whole game. Once the area is fully loaded, your framerate won't be much higher as when you had less RAM.
I hope this clears things up a bit.

ok but when i come outside just when it ended "loading" it starts stuttering reeeaal bad and framerate lowers to 2 FPS so it DOES has to do something with framerate am i right (cuz maybe im talking bullshit now)

btw ik ben nl dat praat makkelijker maar zet eronder een engelse vertaling bij voor de anderen

not important voor ppl from other country's besides belgium/holland

If you want much better Frame Rates get the : ATI X850 AGP it will be out very soon and don't forget to get more RAM!

...and don't forget to spend more money! I don't think it makes much sense to dish out hundreds of dollars so you can just put your HL2 textures on high. Whoopity-do, your game now looks slightly better. I've tried the game on high, I've tried it on low, no HUGE difference that is worth spending lots of casheesh on. If your system runs the game, and you can play it for the actual FUN of the game, then consider yourself rewarded. It was originally for the gameplay after all. Graphics are nothing but a way to keep you into the gameplay, and you shouldn't consider it the reason you bought this game. So, my point is, if you can run it at low, leave it there. When there comes a time that your system runs absolutely nothing, then it's time to upgrade. Then and only then. As for my advice for you, buy a new video card for now. That is the result of bad framerates, not RAM.

P.S. Don't come at me with that "the way it's meant to be played" bullshit. It's meant to be played as a game, not a gorgeous slideshow.

I hate Game stuttering that's from insufficient RAM. In regards to the ATI X850 it was able to handle with high resolutions 16X AF no AA the X850 PE was able to handle 2X AA, 16X AF with no problems.

It's hard to keep up to date with Hardware it changes constantly, however the amount of RAM needed to run the latest generation of Games is 1GB (IMO).

I could drive an old crappy car and yes it will get me to my destination, but I would rather drive a S500 Mercedes.

frame rate has got little to do with ram , either video or system.

graphics card is most for frame rate followed by cpu.
