Framerate problems in HL engined games

I recently upgraded my graphics card to a 9800 XT, and it seems that after I did that, all HL engined games have been giving me framerate issues. I don't get it! All of my other games, including Doom 3, play perfectly. I played HL and CS yesterday and at certain points I get down to 15 fps! I played TFC today, and it was the same story. It's like I'm running a Voodoo 3 or something.

The slowdows occur when there is action going on, and gets silky smooth whenever there isn't any.

What did you get before, and what was your old card?

This should be in the hardware forum.
Anyways, all I can say is, try updating your drivers if you haven't. The drivers provided with the card isn't as up to date.
Try the Omega drivers...

Before I upgraded, I had a GeForce 4 Ti4600 and I got silky smooth framerates.

I have up-to-date Catalyst drivers, but I guess I can give these a shot.

By the way, that omegacornet.net site you linked me to is just some bullshit search crapware.

he shouldn't have to get omega drivers to have smooth framerates with those specs. it's not the video driver; it's something else.

I had this problem after i went around digging inside my case, not that i touched the gfx card. The framerates were fine previously.
I installed 4.8 catalysts, changed some settings and rechanged settings and in HL console, did all the developer 1, max fps stuff.... and nothing worked, but all of a sudden it did... and im happy now. i dont knoow what it is, but i think it goes eventually, just upgrade the gfx drivers and play with some settings, keeping to default if possible.
