You have to pay for Guild Wars once by buying the game, playing online is free.....it's not out yet.
as for some free mmorpg....
Knight Online - not too shabby, graphics are not that great, gameplay gets repetetive
Risk Your Life- Pretty good, decent graphics, fast gameplay, not too many quests are available yet, Uber lag...
Planeshift- AFAIK, there's no combat or quests that are available yet, Everquest graphics.....that's all i can say about it...
Priston Tale- this game has been in US beta for so long that there's already an expansion pack/upgrade for the BETA.... cartoonish graphics, fast gameplay, bad camera control, very populated

Has anyone heard of Neocron? Im telling you, it might not have the biggest playerbase and it might not be that bug free but this game wipes the floor with any FPS online and is the best MMORPG out by a long way. Unless of course you like being on a leveling trademill for 12 months just to get high level then this MMO isnt for you.
Ill give a back story why it isnt popular at all. When the game was released the publisher for the game was CDV and they didnt advertise it what-so-ever...the game slowly died because less and less people knew about it because the publisher was'nt doing their job...CDV are no longer the publisher and have'nt been for a while because they simply cannot be worked with. I know you cant put the entire blame on the publisher but 85% is their fault, Have you heard of neocron? thats that settled.
Anyway the game is set for a massive expansion in September of this year (private beta testing is happening right now, i know, my m8 is in the beta) and although this expansion has been delayed for over a year it really is coming this time and it isnt just an expansion, its a re-release of the game alongside new publisher BigBen who published DAOC (so i believe) and is being re-named to Neocron "2" : Beyond Dome of York. The expansion add's lots of new content including an all new city to the game (it will be DoY vs Neocron, factions lie between the two empires) but add's a whole new engine massive upgrade from its DX7.0 counterpart atm to DX9.0 (DX7.0 relied a lot on CPU and this game needs a fast CPU more than anything atm, my X800pro does'nt make a difference to it) which will make the game not only look nicer (from 256x256 textures to 512x512 textures) but will make it alot less reliant on cpu and make the gfx card do the work like games should do.
www.neocron.com is the place to go to get a free trial, it isnt expensive and if you can afford an internet connection to look at this then whats £4 a month? :/
If anyone should download this and try it then if you get stuck with PATCHING (which you will with #166 patch to be exact) be sure to PM here for a very fast solution and fix. Ill post some pictures of it from a players aspect because most media of this game bar the DoY new trailer is quite confusing as it isnt the real game as you would see it.

As you can see the graphics are'nt bad anyway for an MMO. Anyway i think your missing out on a really good game, believe me you dont need to be an MMORPG maniac to like this game. This was my first one and i came from CS to this and now i have'nt even got CS installed anymore and ive been playing for 1.5 years so far. When DoY (Dome of York) comes this game _might_ get really popular, i mean its got massive potential but no one has heard of it. Try it and ask me for help how to get it patched if you come accross problems and i play Uranus server.
Edit/ I know i said its a FPS (which it is) but i prefer 3rd person view over 1st person view for PvP and this game works around PvP (Player vs Player) for the best part, you are free to do whatever you want outside safe zones (copbot [coppers] zones) to whoever you want whenever you want except LE runners (LE = Law Enforcer) which makes them un-able to be shot and they are un-able to shoot anyone else as well (much reccomended for new players).
Ill give a back story why it isnt popular at all. When the game was released the publisher for the game was CDV and they didnt advertise it what-so-ever...the game slowly died because less and less people knew about it because the publisher was'nt doing their job...CDV are no longer the publisher and have'nt been for a while because they simply cannot be worked with. I know you cant put the entire blame on the publisher but 85% is their fault, Have you heard of neocron? thats that settled.
Anyway the game is set for a massive expansion in September of this year (private beta testing is happening right now, i know, my m8 is in the beta) and although this expansion has been delayed for over a year it really is coming this time and it isnt just an expansion, its a re-release of the game alongside new publisher BigBen who published DAOC (so i believe) and is being re-named to Neocron "2" : Beyond Dome of York. The expansion add's lots of new content including an all new city to the game (it will be DoY vs Neocron, factions lie between the two empires) but add's a whole new engine massive upgrade from its DX7.0 counterpart atm to DX9.0 (DX7.0 relied a lot on CPU and this game needs a fast CPU more than anything atm, my X800pro does'nt make a difference to it) which will make the game not only look nicer (from 256x256 textures to 512x512 textures) but will make it alot less reliant on cpu and make the gfx card do the work like games should do.
www.neocron.com is the place to go to get a free trial, it isnt expensive and if you can afford an internet connection to look at this then whats £4 a month? :/
If anyone should download this and try it then if you get stuck with PATCHING (which you will with #166 patch to be exact) be sure to PM here for a very fast solution and fix. Ill post some pictures of it from a players aspect because most media of this game bar the DoY new trailer is quite confusing as it isnt the real game as you would see it.

I play Graal Online, it aint exactly free, you can get a trial for free, but you cant save. Its a lot like Zelda, because it was originally based off of Zelda, Anyways its a one time fee for it pretty much, if you like the trial.
