free programs to convert movie file types?

Hi, I recently got a high-definition camera and it records in AVCHD/mpeg 4. Can you guys recommend any free programs to download that would let me convert that into some smaller, more managable format like avi or mpeg 2?

When I got my HD camera, I had the same issue. I had to get Sony Vegas to do it well...everything else seemed to not do so well...I'm curious what people come up with, though.
