freezing lag

This problem happens so often, it's very much a routine thing in every cs:s game I play.

What happens is I play the game as normal, killing and dying, etc. But almost every round, usually multiple times, there's some kind of pause I get. I can't move, I can see everyone around me move for a short time (sometimes all of it), and then after probably 5-10 seconds, I'll be able to move again and, for some reason, displaying all the items' icons I started with/bought.

During this time, as I've mentioned, I can't move in any way, shape, or form. Why is this?

I am using cable modem with a router.

Do you have any firewalls installed? ZoneAlarm and Sygate cause this on a lot of computers.

I have this same problem :( it makes CS:S almost unplayable. What do I do to stop this? (and yes, I have zone alarm)

I turned off the firewall and it still didnt work. Does anyone know how to fix this bug? please, it makes CS:s unplayable!

well, I'm glad to see someone else is having this problem. I hope it's just a beta thing.

I don't use a software firewall, no. But I do use a firewall, and I've never had a problem with any other game before.

Mine's still playable, just hiccups rather strongly here and there.

I have zonealarm, but on or off, I still get this hiccup (as you say still playable but annoying when you die cos of it). Personally I have had some success by lowering cl_cmdrate to 20 cl_updaterate to 15 and cl_rate to 8000, it still ain't right, but it's quite a bit better(most of the time LOL).

Are you sure it has nothing to do with the freeze time at the beginning of a round?

go to microsoft.net then updates install everything there, that will solve it before i had the exact same problem.

Just disabling ZoneAlarm won't help you have to completely uninstall it.

î do really have to uninstall zone alarm to fix that?

dougness...what updates???

Yeah pixartist, I don't know why but even when you don't have ZA running in the process list there are still some remnants that conflict with your connection in CS. It could be registry settings I don't really know, but I do know that when I uninstalled it the freezing completely stopped :)

well, i have a dlink router...ill try to switch it off and plug directly...

hmm. I'll have to try that. But if anybody else has this problem, lemme know. I like knowing other people have this.

man, I REALLY dont wan to have to get zone alarm uninstalled just for this! There must be an alternative...

i uninstalled zone alarm and the lag has gone.
Im now using sygate personal firewall instead

I've tried uninstalling zonealarm- had some success but am so paranoid have put it back on lol.

Have found by ending the process tree in task manager I get basically the same effect, still not right but much more playable:)

Also by using cl_lagcompensation 0 (and also cl_smooth 0 though have noticed very little difference) it's nearly like 1.6, now I just have to get my rates sorted....

So one question CB l para, what speed connection have you got and what values do you use for:
rate
cl_rate
cl_cmdrate
cl_updaterate

Just nice to see what values you get best performance from, i'm on 256k but that doesn't matter as long as you tell me your connection speed- It should give me an idea whereabouts to start:)
