Freezing problems in online games

Hello there y'all
I have a problem with both HL2DM and CS:S, upon joining a server as a player, about 10 - 20 seconds after the initial spawning, the game just stops responding. I can still look around, but i can't move, shoot, jump. nothing. just standing in place. (often jittering up and down)
I can still hit esc and disconnect, so I don't think the game realises anything is wrong. *shrugs*
Any solutions?
I don't think this is a hardware issue, no overclocking, I have a gigabyte mobo, althlon 2800+, ati 9600 and 512mb ram.

How's your internet connection? I've had this happen a few times in moments of really bad client and server lag.

tis only a 56k connection... so i get pings of about 200 - 250.
So it should clear up after a few seconds....
lag you say? that would explain why it doesn't happen over lan.

That'd be my guess. Typically you'll see a "Connection Problem" (or similar) in the upper right hand corner...unless you recover fast enough.

pity this one doesn't recover... or at least I haven't bothered staying around long enough.
