game freezing problems. i bought the game from circuit city today, and after installing it, i finally got into the game. problem was, about 10 mins into the first level, the game froze, to the point where i had to hard-reset my comp. ive downloaded the demo, and it worked fine but this wont work. also, HL2: Deathmatch does the same thing.
on a side note, Gary's mod doesnt work either. the error message is in the pic below.

...um, no Steam Content Servers avaliable. Are you connected to the internet? System specs, please.

Most odd because you could already play them, connect to Steam etc. so I assume you have a 'net connection...

yes, i do have a internet connection, but id rather fix Half Life, before i fix a mod for it.

as for the specs, i am definatelly qualified.
  • 2 GHz Processor
  • 1 gig of RAM
  • 256 mb ATI Radeon Xpress series Graphics card

as for the problem of Half-Life 2 constantly freezing, i tried re-installing, but that didnt seem to help any.

"Mod"? I'm guessing you are referring to Steam, since that is the only thing Jintor mentioned other than HL2. Steam isn't a mod, it's the thing that will let you play etc, and can validate your game files. You DO have a legit version of Steam, HL2, Steam account etc, right?

I'm a little concerned about your screenshot - "Mountfilesystem" and "SteamMountFilesystem". "Mounting" is usually referring to emulating etc - as in you have programs running to FAKE Steam and its server connection to an account etc, so the game thinks it is legit and will run. I could be on the wrong track with that, but it seems awfully suspicious to me, and I have NEVER seen an error even LIKE that before...

Yes shasta you are wrong about that :P Steam uses the term 'SteamMountblahblah' a lot in it's error messages.
The mod he's talking about is Garry's mod, as he mentioned in the first post it is crashing with the error message.

Anyway, ZimFreak, I don't know much about this issue although I bet it's hardware related.
The only thing I don't see mentioned is video drivers, make sure your ATi drivers are up to date.

Try searching the steampowered forums for threads dealing with the same issue.

That's fine - like I said, I wasn't sure if that was the right path or not. I personally have never come across an error like that - I guess I just keep my machine up-to-date and running smoothly...

Strange that he would go on about it again when no-one had brought it up. Only Steam and HL2 had been discussed, yet he randomly talks about Garry's mod without mentioning it by name. How odd. Why would someone do that? Why oh why? I just don't understand people that don't make sense, or have a random thought process...

But try jam on it, mines silver.

Woof.

HE MENTIONED IT SHASTA!

First post, go take a look. :O

*Sigh* Jintor, I really don't want to have to go all "Shasta" on your ass, as you seem OK, so I will just point out the part of my post that acknowledges that I KNOW he mentioned it in his first post, but also I point out that no-one had mentioned it since.

No, no, no. Let me look.

The ERROR MESSAGE is from GMOD CRASHING as opposed to the HALF-LIFE 2 problem.

See?

/EDIT Arrr, half these tech threads seem to morph into you arguing with someone. :O

No, no, no. Let me look.

The ERROR MESSAGE is from GMOD CRASHING as opposed to the HALF-LIFE 2 problem.
Yes, I know that. That has nothing to do with what I'm talking about at all.

Let's start from the start: He posted. You replied mentioning only Steam, and an internet connection, and he replied about not wanting to fix a mod before fixing the game - but you never said anything about mods. NOW do you see why I said it was strange? YOU hadn't said anything about G-mod, yet he piped up about it again randomly. Nothing to do with screen shots etc. You seem to have confused the two separate parts of my post or posts.

People forget about assuming good faith.

The "MountFilesystem" error isn't behind the crashing of games other than Garry's Mod, I think. It might be related, or it might not. You haven't been very descriptive about the circumstances in which the problem occurs, so advice will be vague. Check your video card drivers, make sure your connection's fine, and make sure your hard drive isn't weirded in any way that would stop the Steam filesystem from working on your computer.

The Steam Content Error thingy is his error that he gets when he starts up GMOD, Shasta. :O

Jintor are you trying to set off the Shasta bomb or something?

I'm not being Xendance, if that's what you're saying. > >

Sweet tap-dancing Christ. I'm not talking about his error screenshot. Got it?

You didn't talk about G-Mod, yet he acted like you did. THAT is what I said was strange. It was just a passing comment too, that has you all flustered. Re-read the thread. Forget Steam. Forget errors. Forget screenshots. Do I really need to keep explaining it to you?

MY RESPONSE WAS TO THE SCREAMSHOT!

Uh, screenshot.

>_>

I've solved the mystery!
I'll try and make it simple.

ZimFreak: Hi, HL2 and HL2DM Freeze. Gmod is also broken, gives me this error message.

Jintor: That error message seems to say something about steam servers, you connected to the internet right? System specs? HMMM WEIRD.

ZimFreak: Yea I'm connected, but nevermind the Gmod problem, I'd rather fix HL2 freezing.

There. What Shasta missed was that Jintor had been talking about gmod in his whole post, because he was talking about the error message it gives. That's what ZimFreak was responding to, rather than mentioning the mod out of nowhere. Get it Shasta? (I didn't at first tbh)
...Shasta?
Shit, too late, he's s'ploded.

Well, at least he didn't s'plode automatically. Much better now that he's learnt...

EXPLOSION!

(SHASTA learnt EXPLOSION!)

ok, to clear things up, the screenshot is of the error message i get from Garry's Mod. and in MY second post i said i would rather fix Half Life before i fix Gary's Mod. this is because he said to check my internet connection, due to what the error said from Garry's mod. at that time, Half Life hadn't been addressed yet.

as for the hardware issue, i believe my drivers are up to date (I got this laptop this christmas). but the weird thing is, the game runs silky smooth umtil in the first level, when i get to jumping down the ledge after i find the officer dude is my friend. but its always Around that spot. not just at the same time.

as for being a thief... im not. I went to circuit city, bought the game, and installed Steam and HL 2 from there. everything should be legal... except for garry's mod 9, which i got from FileFront, i believe, but thats free, anyway. i just couldnt find it anywhere else. its always GM 10, but i dont want to buy it just yet.

i also just validated the Steam files through the link Jintor gave me. im trying Half life again now.

The freezing thing sounds like it might be an overheating prob. Turn off fast-writes, and set your AGP speed from 8X to 4x if your card lets you. You won't notice much of a performance hit.

But first update your graphics drivers. It doesn't matter that you got the lappy at Xmas, PC's often ship with ancient drivers from the factory, plus it's been a fair few months now.

sounds good, but exactly how would i go about doing that? and i tried to validate the steam files, and nothing changed...

For the drivers, just go to http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

For fast writes and AGP speed check SmartGart in either:
-Your ATI Catalyst Control Center or
-on your desktop, right click, go 'properties', the 'settings' tab, 'advanced' button, and the 'smartgart' tab.

BTW these instructions might be inaccurate since I'm not sure if mobility cards for laptops have a different control settings arrangement. ALso, this will only help if your problem really is overheating, and even then it's not guaranteed.

Thanks Alot Laivasse i upgraded the drivers and finaly got Half Life up and and running.

But... i still have the problem with GMOD9

Still having the same error message i posted way back to the first so post one if you can find and Help or Support

Try:

1. Reinstalling Gmod 9
2. Installing an older version of Gmod

That's all I can think of :\

I'm afraid I've never bothered with Garrysmod *tag someone else*

You could always buy GMOD10 off Steam if you wanted to. > >

i would, but id first-- i rather try it out, and second i still dont know if it would work.

i downloaded GMod 8, same error.

Have you contacted Steam Support? Although I'm not sure if GMOD9 is their problem...

Like it says, it looks like a SteamServer problem.

It could be that he has put it in the wrong folder, or hasn't unzipped it properly etc. How exactly are you trying to START G-mod? In the Steam menu - right?

GMod 9 was installed from an .exe file. and yes, im starting it from the steam "My Games" section. i gets to a grey background witha few items at the bottom-right, then after about 3-5 seconds, i closes and gives the error in the first post.

well, guys thanks for all your help, because today i bought GMod 10 (Its awesome) and it works fine. i think all of my Steam/Half Life 2 problems have been solved for now. thanks again
