Yesterday a friend was telling me about his computer that when he turns it on, he smells something burning. I told him it's probably his PSU. Heres the thing, its an HP. I've never owned an HP so I don't know which form factors the mobos are. Anyone know?

Reason I'm asking is that I'm going to pick out a new PSU for him at newegg. I guess as long as it's any type of an ATX mobo a 20 (or 24) pin PSU would work?

Anyways im going to his house tomorrow to check it out so I need some replies, ASAP.

thanks

Well, when things are new specially electronics and cars and such they smell pretty bad, and its not because they're burning, but because. I don't know.
But they just do.

Are you having a system components failing? Is PSU failing failed?
Is this a new PC?

The motherboards are ATX form factor, however check that the PSU will actually fit in the case itself. Also, smell of something burning could well be non-PSU related..

.. in fact I'm leaning towards burned-out capacitors on the motherboard or similar.

hmm, yeah true. Well I'll start off with the easiest things to eleminate. Wont know until tomorrow.

Just open up the case.
I think you'll find a new PSU won't actually fit in the HP case.

Is the computer fine aside from this burning smell?

I agree.

I'm guessing it could be a dodgy video card, or fan

Well within 2 seconds of breakin open the case, I found the problem. The heatsink that keeps the north bridge cool fell off. The bracket that mounted onto the board had someone popped off. He must have kicked it for it too pop off like that. It's fixed at least.:bounce:
