Friends doesn’t show as online

I have a problem with the friends-list in Steam. My added friends show as “offline” even though I know they are online. What should I do to make my friends show as online, when they actually are online???

I am behind a router, but I have opened all necessary ports (UDP 1200, UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive and TCP 27030 to 27039 inclusive).

same thing here, i presumed it was because steam was swamped? Incidently i didnt show up as online either (MSN was working )
