slumdog millionaire kid has to readjust to the dirty poor life of the slums.

"I don't want to sleep on the floor anymore. I want a proper bed and live where the air does not smell of poo. I have seen what it is like in America. Here, there is garbage everywhere, people get angry, swear and shout. I have realised how bad life is here. I just want to get out."

couldn't have put it better

on a side note...my professor said that one possible outcome for the third world is that despite having more food they'll breed even more, leading to an endless cycle of poverty...what do you think?

Other regions have managed to get themselves out of it, why not them? Nothing is inevitable.

Lower birth rates will come with improved living conditions. When only half of your children make it to adulthood you need to have more of them in the first place.

Improved living conditions come with lower birth rates. When you only have two children, it is easier to feed them and send them to school.

And birth control helps.

Sure, until they die of disease.

although i don't entirely agree with the professor...the difference nowadays is that the developed countries are meddling with the poor ones. if you look at it...what will we do when cheap labor is no longer available? so it's kinda in the consumerist interest that poor countries remain poor.

You're correct, jverne. The reason the 1'st world is allowed to operate the way it does relies heavily on keeping the 3rd world impoverished and without labor or living condition standards.

so unless those countries go trough a kind of revolution or that we change our ways, there's little chance things will improve. because i wouldn't be that wrong if i say that our corporations pay big bucks to those governments to keep the situation as it is.

The world doesn't have the resources for everyone to have a comfortable Western lifestyle. Pretty soon it probably won't even have the resources for everyone to keep eating. That means that either a majority of people live in poverty, or the world population decreases via death or birth control. But it still beats 1000 years ago, where by today's standards pretty much everybody lived in poverty. Even kings didn't get ice cream and air conditioning in the summer or internet at home.

Possibly. Recently India and China (and other smaller asian countries) have been investing big time in GM crop research.

Some people are of the belief that these kids can't possibly be living in the slums anymore simply because they have been given some money for their performances and the fact that the movie has done so well.

They ignore harsh reality and facts!

We need to colonize other planets! Damn why will it have to take another million years before we can even travel fast/far enough for that. We need some terraforming on Mars ASAP.

You ignore common sense, and believe everything you read.

I got the real scoop.

The truth is, this kid is living in a mansion, and he's a greedy **** who wants even more money.

His dad intends to chloroform him and scald his eyeballs so he can earn double money as a star.

Yes because then we can be impoverished and live in an airless, cold, hell hole :/

Also, even if we found another Earth in our backyard tomorrow, it would NOT solve problems of poverty on earth. Its very expensive to travel to other planets. If Mars were terraformed today, it would be a few researchers and scientists at first, then a few enormously wealthy people, and then a few corporate interests. I would estimate that in 2-300 years of colonization of a perfectly habitable Mars, less than a million people would be able to emigrate.

Meanwhile, the population of Earth continues to rise, especially in impoverished areas.

The best we can do for impoverished areas is to increase their economic output by improving agriculture, medicine, and manufacturing. Impoverished areas need to take up modern methods of farming first, so that the agricultural workforce demand will go down. Once this goes down, farmers will not need as large of families to sustain a living, and agricultural production will boom. However, local governments must at the same time begin to instill population controls to ensure that the population doesn't boom with agricultural production. If it doesn't, farmers will flood the cities (as they already are), looking for jobs where there are none available. If the government does nothing, famine and disease will take care of the population problem, but either way the impoverished area will become a stable, industrial society.
