After months of boasting it was going to be used as an army training sim, it's not much surprise that when the game came out the army wanted nothing to do with it and boldly announced so on the game box itself. I didn't think it was extremely surprising, considering the game looked like a failed bowel movement.

But now FSW found a new home in the army, this time as psychological medecine. Yeppers, distressed soldiers coming back from the front (where they shouldn't be in the first place, but that's for another day) are experiencing a new school of therapy.

Why don't they give them a proper game?

Battlefield 2, then they could have Post-traumatic-LAN-party syndrome.

"Frag clips" are currently being put to test a US weapons testing base, these clips will attach to any size gun, it comes with a touchpad much like you would get on a household laptop, and a small 7" screen, when firing the gun its attached to, the frag clip will work out if the target was killed then add the kill to the "score" list. The frag clip is in its last stage of testing, networking up to 10 at a time via radio waves to show your teammates scored. A spokesperson for the US Weapons testing base wouldnt give us an interview, but did say this..

"We beileve giving a score in the battlefield will give men and women more drive to train better, to outdo there teammates. Its gonna be totally awesome"

The frag clip is expected to be in use by 2008, and cheaper versons are currently being made (These will not have as long range networking) for public to use for hunting, and paintballing.

Ok I lied..

Is that really true? I think Half-Life 2 would be even better at that.

Yes, but all the anarchaphofobiaacars are all cured now.

I remember reading about that a while ago, but I don't remember how they did it. Could you refresh me?

Edit: Ahh nevermind, they put in a bunch of animated spiders in the game, I remember now.

Funny, since Half Life made me arachnophobic. "Please let there not be a headcrab in the vent. Please let there not be a headcrab in the vent. Please let there not be a headcrab in the vent. Please let there not be a headcrab in the vent.Please let there not be a hea..." *SCREE!* "AHH DAMNIT!"

Somehow that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Gaming used in the army = perfectly ontopic. Go die..

You could have done a better job of relating it to the original topic.

I thought it was well written, actually.

Ironically, you can get MP3 players that plug into the clip hole in an AK47, so Burn's idea isn't far from truth.

arachnophobia == spiders

Headcrabs != spiders

my C++ logic is flawless

Headcrabs {Look a bit like} spiders

my CNubNub logic is flawless too ;)

Heh.. I think this calls for a quote from a close friend of mine who got back from Iraq in November.

I feel I need to make some comments about Battlefield 2 demo. Yes, I've been playing the shit out of it every night and yes, I find it very enjoyable. But, as a groundpounder, I find faults in its realism. Here are my gripes:

1. Reload times are ridiculous. It doesn't take that long to reload an assault rifle, and that's the only reload time I have problems with. When you fired the last round, the bolt is LOCKED TO THE REAR, therefore you drop magazine, load another one, and push the bolt release on the left side. There's no recharging the bolt or even pushing that stupid forward assist on the right side. We've timed quick reloads in training and even in Iraq, and it takes us just a little under 3 seconds to release magazine AND put it back nicely into the pouch, pull out a new one and go through with reloading. In a game, it shouldn't take more than a second and a half to reload. All those reload animations are bullcrap.

2. M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, a personal weapon that I've known for years. Having to haul it in combat, I know it intimately. I know for a FACT that I have fired 10 round bursts and wasted an entire 200 round drum and it doesn't STOP FIRING because it's "overheated." THAT'S bullshit. They should have made it extremely inaccurate after anything longer than a 6 round burst instead of doing that overheating crap. They might have different SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) in the Marine Corps, and I'm sure our cousin branch will back me up on that as well. Same with the M2 50 caliber machineguns mounted on the M1A1's and whatnot. They might overheat, but it doesn't stop it from firing. Not only that, but they can fire a lot more than 50-100 rounds before they overheat.

3. Parachute. Yeah, jumping off the roof and using the parachute to save your ass is fun in the game, but that shit doesn't happen. I don't have my jump wings or anything, but I know for a damn fact paratrooping is a complicated technic to the uneducated and simple for airborne infantry soldiers, and it's not just "pull cord" here and "strafe left" there.

4. Disorientation. When an explosion goes off close to me (I forgot how close my record was, it's hard to recall when you hear booms everyday for a year straight), there's no ****ing blurriness. Everything slows down a bit, but everything maintains a hyper-realistic speed. And if your adrenaline was really pumping, you don't lose much hearing even if it was real close. Now, I got no beef with how BF2 did this effect, but they should have nixed it. It's a stupid thing that really can't and SHOULDN'T be simulated. It doesn't give me bad flashbacks or bring up bad memories, it's just stupid and annoying and unreal.

5. Models. The M4 and M249 model have some inaccurate details on it, but just small annoyances.

6. Radio communication. Inconsistant. If they wanted to make it seem real, they should do proper radio procedures. Like, "YOU, this is ME, this happened, OVER." "Roger. Air support detached, time now. ETA 5 mikes. Out" The radio chatter made it a distraction for me.

7. Marines. Now, I have the upmost respect for our cousin infantry groundpounders. And true, Marines have done more than their part in invasion and occupation of OBJs. But couldn't they have made it Coalition Forces instead? After all, Army infantry have got more fundings and got the better toys. I guess what I mean is, I wish they had more player models to chose from, like Joint Operations.

8. Last thing I can recall, silencer on the pistol. WHAT THE ****?! Once you have made hard contact with hostile forces, what the **** is the point?! Sniping I can understand, snipers can still post on rooftops and hit from afar without getting IDed and Tagged, but silencer on the M9 Beretta 9mm pistol in urban combat?! Maybe you can unlock other pistols in the full game, but if I see a silencer I can't detach from, say, a USP 40 or a MK23, I'll frown upon that (I won't say shit a break because it's just a game).

That was longer than I thought, but eh. Sometimes, knowing the military too well ruins a lot of fun aspects of military-themed entertainment. Bleh.

I could of, but then again no I couldnt of.

Interesting perspective. I say forward that on to EA Games. Maybe they'll put all that into a patch.
