Okay. I give you a game. Then you have to work out what metaphors it contains, what relevence it has to modern culture. For example, Half-Life, you could argue, is a metaphor for human isolation, or for man's polution of the enviroment. Anyway. This may not be so popular...but I dare you to post to show that you're not an idiot. I dare you!
Ok, first game is...pac-man. A goldmine of metaphor, that one.

A man that has to pack up because hes fed up with his wife and it driving away to mexico.

nice thread :D

I got a new one:

Warcraft:

The peasents drive the economy, keeping those who fight/rule in power, a Marxist game if I ever saw one. However the peasents have little power to self-determine and change their station in life, so it is more of a game about the realities and practicalities of communism :D

(yeah... sorry about the bs ^_^ )

Thanks Badger. I was kinda hoping someone would say pac-man was a metaphor for advanced capitalism....he eats and eats and eats, but no matter how much he does he is never satisfied with life.

Erm...new one then. Crash Banficoot. Should have some fun with that. A metaphor for modern society. Crash thinks he is free, but really he is forced down the same linear path.

hmmmm Crash Bandicoot (I've never played this at all... so I'm going to make it up) is a metaphor for our capitalistic modern society, in a different way:
He is always looking for the next platform, and the next powerup, never happy with what he has, always wanting to go further, knowing that the journey may kill him, or at least take time, and when he finally reaches his goal.... he is unsatisfied.

glad to help :D

Heh heh. I was wondering when someone would work out that one, goes with pac-man, too. In fact most games are a metahor for capitalism. Crash Bandicoot looks like its 3d and freeform, but its just a normal platform game unlike, say, spyro the dragon.
I think It's time to let others post subject games. i'm running out of ideas.

Deus Ex. Should have a field day with that one.

You are all retards, to leave an origional and interesting thread like this neglected. Except you Badger, and lets be honest, it isn't much fun with two people

Okay, then I'll keep it going.

Mario? (Think drug related.)

A man growing up, from child to adulthood, to finding his bride.

oh, forgot a game....

Gorf!
(Space invaders clone for colecovision)

Aha! There we go. see all you need is a little love. I'm quite ashamed of myself for flipping out like that, I acted like a bloody forum troll. Please forgive me. Anyway, gorf? that'll be space invaders then. A metaphor for the ultimate pointlessness of existence. What fun!
Who wopuld be interested in a writing compo, people could enter by e-mail and the winner could get a budget came, or five pounds (or dollars, or whatever) or something. Anybody?

Is a metaphor something like this?
A Garg is bad to Gordon as Gordon is bad to a scientist.
I think that's what a metaphor is, I think I'll ask my teacher(s).

anyways, how about bust-a-move

a couple of friends have to work together to destroy the challenges in life before getting crushed by all that is stronger than them...

Sorry Tredo. Thats a similie. pay attention!
Pac-Man is a metaphor for capitalism. He eats and eats and eats (like a middle-class shopper buying stuff, but is never satisfied, never whole. That, without the explanation brackets would be a metaphor. ask you english teacher. and I'm not taking the piss.

Anyway, carry on everybody.

^ thats not a game.

Anyway: Devastation:

A metaphor for the most pointless of human wars: WW1. The enemies keep on coming, and shooting, and dying, in waves, no tactics, the same bland enviroments... etc

I love this thread... it's for the clever :D

Half Life:
In the end, everyone is comtroled by someone else. There is no free will, only different paths to the same decision

New Game:

Polybius (this'l be a tough one, mwahahaha as only few have played it)

Okay, whatever, metaphors are confusing, I only know what's a similie and some other things.

Guess I'll join in, although I've never even heard of Polybius :|

How about Aliens versus Predator?

Tred - think of it this way. Simlies are 'like' and metaphors are 'is'. Basically a metaphor is a simile but... man it's hard to explain, it's comparing two things but on a different level... argh **** look it up :D

Mr. Bildo Gaming Metaphor #1: Metroid:

Views and attitudes of male machoism and sexuality are tested when the blaster-yielding hero unmasks 'himself' and 'he' is a woman. It's revealed that one cannot judge a person's merit on appearance, preconceptions or stereotypes, but rather--their actions.

-Mr. Bildo

Mr. Bildo Gaming Metaphor #2: Pac-Man:

One can never truly escape their difficulties in life; they can only be faced and defeated with great effort. Not grabbing the opportunities to combat life's challenges and difficulties might buy you time, but they will catch up with you if ignored. The irony is that these problems may be conquered and go away, but one is never problem free. Eventually new challenges will emerge.

-Mr. Bildo

Mr. Bildo Gaming Metaphor #3: Donkey Kong:

When faced with overwhelming brute force, reacting with force is not the answer. Mighty foes can be defeated with cunning, perseverance and skill, even when the possibility of success seems impossible.

-Mr. Bildo

Mr. Bildo Gaming Metaphor #4: Sonic the Hedgehog

Despite the advancement of Man's technological wonders, his disregard for life, nature and the environment will be his ultimate undoing when those he has trampled on rise against him. The majesty of Man and his metal machines is unseated by the purity of nature.

-Mr. Bildo

Mr. Bildo Gaming Metaphor #5: Tetris

Sanity is only preserved when one has properly fit those pieces of their life together that make it all work out. Over time, the neglected pieces begin to make life more difficult until eventually the pieces no longer fit and all is lost.

-Mr. Bildo

Mr. Bildo Gaming Metaphor #6: Asteroids

Problems are much easier to deal with when they’re broken into manageable tasks.

-Mr. Bildo

Mr. Bildo Gaming Metaphor #7: Populous

Man is eternally bent on this own destruction. Given any planet of any size, man will eventually grow his numbers and spread until the only available space is the one he forcefully removes from another. Man's greed and prejudices will cultivate this plight as groups and factions sweep across the land destroying one another.

-Mr. Bildo

that would fit on one post...and how did you write 8 metaphores in 3 minutes?

He had some pre-packed metaphors, available from all good literature stores.

Counterstrike is a metaphor for the ultimate relation betwee all human beings.
And anyone interested in a writing compo? Both judges and entries needed.

Umm.. I wasn't going to answer the original guy, because frankly I go through the time to contribute to the post and some ass-hater comes along and says, "Uhh.. you coulda put that in one post", but since the validity of my content is in question I guess I'll clarify:

I wrote them down before I posted them. Is that good enough for the nit-pickers? Oh, and BTW, I didn't rip them off from a book.

Honestly, this is why I hate posting on forums...

-Mr. Bildo

The validity of your metaphors is in question? Hey, I didn't mean it like that, it was a joke. Where would you have got them from anyway?
Anyway, I sorry if I offended you, I have no doubt that you thought of them yourself.
Right, new game is.......

Deus Ex (since nobody replied to it the first tim-or could it be none of you have played it?)
