Future of Half-Life 2 mods?

I read somewhere that Valve bought CS because of its sales potential and that we will have to pay for CS2.

I know they're greedy like most companies and only see $$$; but do you think they will buy up all of the popular free mods and sell them back to the community?

I don't want to play an awesome mod for months only to have Valve buy it up and restrict its access to only those people who handed over their money.

The main reason I've decided to buy Half-Life 2 is because there will be a lot of cool mods using Source, and it would be well worth the $60 price tag.

I don't want to have to pay for every good mod :| they are supposed to be free.

It will most likely be like HL1, 56kers can buy the game and broadband users can download it, Hopefully you wont have to pay for CS2 and any other MODs.... yeah.

TF2 you have to buy though :p

It would be upto the mod teams whether they want to 'sell out'.

You can bet that alot of people out their will simply be making mods in the hope that theirs will be the hit and that valve takes them on.

Of course, making a decent mod is hard work. Becoming popular is even harder, so maybe they deserve it?

Also of note is that every mod that has gone retail (CS, DoD, Tatical Ops) has also kept up the free version.

I think you are being a little bit pessimistic here......

couldn't of said it better :D

well if you seriously thought that all these artists and modders try to make mods to give it away for free id agree with you but a vast majority of them are hoping and praying to be picked by valve.

You can still download DoD and CS cant you? I'm sure that will carry on with Hl2, unless Valve try to make mods they bought up, exclusive to Steam. Anyway,i would love it if Valve took us on, that would be great.

Errr...blame the Counterstríke team for wanting money not Valve. Valve can't just buy a mod if the mod team doesn't want to go commercial.

Modders got to eat you know, they can't just work for free forever.

Who cares about Cs...we need TF2.

btw i took a look at some of the upcoming mods on the source engine, this one looks increasingly impressive (tho the site is french), but it looks to be TF2/CS just in the future, if anyone speaks any french plz correct me if i'm wrong

I have a ?

If HL2 got the best MP, why playing MP of other games?:borg:

To be honest, i dont mind paying for something so long as it is good quality and i actually get what i pay for.

That means you wouldn't mind paying for a game demo or a game patch.

Unfortunately for me, I don't like the idea of greedy people trying to commercialize something that's always been free.

You don't understand why a mod is free then. When people play mods, they are being the developers beta testers. It has to be the goal of every mod to make a game that is commercially viable. Otherwise why do it?

Valve is a great company in that it allows people to use their engine free of charge, as long as you are not making a for profit game. As soon as a mod goes commercial they would have to pay valve to use their engine.

It gonna be possible to buy mod made by Valve later without paying monthly fee? Y'know, in the store separately like sort of addon or expansion pack.

well u guys dont really undersand wht it takes to make a mod its a big risk to know wht the consumer wants u need to get a team capable enough, the models need to be of proper poly weightage.
the network game play should be smooth.
there is a lot of work into it and i think its not being greedy if you want a lil money for all the time you spent on making something that was given freely.

Is it totally unfair to pay for some mods? For all that matters, it's just a game, with many people working on it 24/7. If they want you to pay for it at some time, respect it or don't play it.
